Sacto1985
Question: does anyone know outside of possibly Shinkansen trains, are train announcements in Japanese done in the local dialect (e.g., standard Japanese in the Tokyo area, Osaka-ben Kansai dialect in the Osaka area, Chūgoku dialect in the Hiroshima area, and so on). Or has there been an agreement for everyone to use standard Japanese in train announcements? Link to comment
bikkuri bahn
AFAIK it's all done in standard dialect (hyoujungo). However, for example in Kansai, intonation differences will creep in for destinations, as there is a rising intonation in Kansai dialect. Link to comment

Unless they are pre-recorded announcements it would depend on the person doing the speaking, just like after I left Edinburgh going north I couldn't understand the conductors announcements anymore. The_Ghan
West, I think you might be referring to accent, the pronounciation of the language. This isn't necessarily the same as dialect, the use of different language, grammar, or words. Cheers The_Ghan Link to comment

Cheers The_Ghan I realise the difference, I was just illustrating my point that it would depend on the speaker. A conductor in Hokkaido would probably let a bit of the local dialect slip into his announcements. Link to comment
Sacto1985
The reason why I mention this is because when I hear the announcements on JR West trains around Osaka, the Japanese announcements sound a tad "different" than what I hear on JR East trains in the Tokyo area. Link to comment
