Densha
Thanks for the compliment, first time I've heard that. :) You really have a lot of trains indeed. If I was you I probably would have already forgot where my trains would be. Link to comment
cteno4
@jappomania Maybe it's my ignorance in English, but what I meant is not opening every box of every single loco or train. I meant to say to take a picture of the whole collection at once without opening the boxes. It depends on how you store them if it's possible or not of course, but if you store them in a (large) box or shelf or something you could take just a pic of that. this is the simplest and actually one of the best ways to get some sort of insurance roster for all your stuff. just go though the house taking a lot of pictures. open up boxes and stuff to document whats in there visually. while not 100% its far better than most any of us will ever get doing lists and keeping them updated. then of course you have to remember to keep the photos off site! having gone through a fire myself and helping friends after they lost everything in a fire, i know how hard it was to figure out what was lost for the insurance. pictures are also better proof you had the item and its condition. I use to be in the good habit of doing this each time i went to a train show with a couple of crates of trains just incase one went poof. i realized each crate held about $3k of trains! ive gotten complacent over the years with nothing being taken at a show, but thats only tempting murphy... I once forgot a small tub of trams (maybe 20 in there) at a meeting at someone's house and realized there was about $1500 of trains in there! yikes! jeff Link to comment
Claude_Dreyfus
One way to help with an insurance inventory is to take out the instructions from the book sets and keep them in a separate folder...well away from your collection if possible Link to comment

domino
I'm currently inspired by this thread to make a database of my trains! It also gave me the idea to sell off a part of my collection (for very fair prices), since I plan to move to Japan in December and I need as little as possible personal belongings. I think it'll be up for sale on the forums in a few weeks. Hey Toni Looking forward to you yard sale Brian Link to comment

Guest ___
That's a weird roster, Shashinka. Just a few trains and in three different scales. The Z-scale was to tide me over till I built my N-scale layout. I had planned to expand my Pro-Z but was so disappointed with the cost and what was included with the C/D plates that I gave up on it. Plus the Real ZJ issue that still gets me mad seeing how the engine burned up a few weeks after it was repaired. The T-scale I was an early adopter for, and ended up never really doing anything with it as the T-scale never was really accepted in japan, plus the delays with the KiHa40 and Hankyu trains. As for the N-scale, I try to stick w/ consists that do not exceed 3-4 cars in length as I model rural Kyushu. I do have a few trains that are non-Kyushu like the 455. The KiHa110 and 40 BBQ are simply because they are short and for some reason appeal to my sense of trams and RDC's. I also had, but sold to Dmitry, a JR-K sonic. I bought the 415 with it. The_Ghan
@jappomania Maybe it's my ignorance in English, but what I meant is not opening every box of every single loco or train. I meant to say to take a picture of the whole collection at once without opening the boxes. It depends on how you store them if it's possible or not of course, but if you store them in a (large) box or shelf or something you could take just a pic of that. .. ops... sorry Densha, you english is better than mine, I'm sure. this is an old photo published for another thread about "how do you store your roster" (or similar, I don't remember) https://picasaweb.google.com/107727436777465107689/Collection it's only the first line (the second is behind but it's to much work to remove all to see the rest) Obviously in the meantime I've added more.. and some sets has been sold (junk sets for kitbashing aren't included) ciao Massimo Massimo, I remember seeing those photos once before. As I have one full cupboard, single row deep, and you have three cupboards double row deep I can only imagine that you have about six times the number of consists that I do. So, you must have around 350 trains. You've got to be looking at around $100k of stuff. Amazing! Cheers The_Ghan Link to comment
The_Ghan
One way to help with an insurance inventory is to take out the instructions from the book sets and keep them in a separate folder...well away from your collection if possible Great idea, except that I like to keep the instructions with each model. I keep a full record of orders, deliveries and payments. Pretty much everything can be traced though the purchases, Paypal and my credit card authorisations. This is pretty much what an insurance company would want anyway as they're more likely to pay out a loss rather than go and replace the items. I have a new-for-old contents policy too. At $25k worth of stuff, it puts the cost of my dehumidifier and base monitored alarm into perspective too. I chose an alarm company where the guard is located just 3-4 minutes drive from the house. The alarm also contacts me by SMS and email. I'd rather not lose my collection at all than to have to start collecting again. Cheers The_Ghan Link to comment
The_Ghan
You can see my collection here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/nippon-modelrailroad-society/sets/72157627054130637/ Brian Nice collection domino, and thanks for the compliment. I notice you've got the Nagoya 8800 two car set. I've got the three car set. I'm so disappointed with this model. It appears to be very old tooling, with an ugly motor sticking up in the lead car, spring worm drive, and ordinary performance on the track. I was wondering what you thought. To me, it is such a shame because I like the prototype design and colour scheme. Cheers The_Ghan Link to comment
The_Ghan
You forgot pre-order 300 series good bye set keitaro, You're right mate. I ordered it a week ago from Bigman. I've amended my roster accordingly. Pity Bigman is located in Gifu, and not near a train station. It makes him difficult to visit when I'm there in October. Folks, another good assurity is having a friend who knows your roster as well as you do! Cheers The_Ghan Link to comment

JR 500系
Wow.... Speechless... After looking at the photo streams of your collections, i wont even dare mention anything about my minute number of trains.... Scary! Link to comment
cteno4
JR, Don't worry about the size of your collection, it's all about your interest and enthusiasm in the hobby, not how big your collection is. You have been showing a lot of enthusiasm in what you are doing getting started in the hobby and interacting here and that beats a big roster in my book. This sort of list thing is a bit akin to the jokes about big cars... Cheers Jeff Link to comment
The_Ghan
I agree Jeff, Just look at the effort Madog puts in. There's enthusiasm for you! Cheers The_Ghan Link to comment
