Hi all,

Other than it's apparent simplicity, what is there about the pantographic bow collectors used by some Japanese trolley cars (and a few interurbans) that seems to endear them to operators?

Do you mean a Z pantograph?

Yep. :grin

Z pantographs allow overhead to be built without frogs and can accommodate higher voltages. Back up moves are much easier with pantographs than trolley poles or bow collectors.  Bow collectors are heavy, rigid, noisy and rarely used these days.

I've noticed that pantographs are quieter in Lisbon than their trolley poles with trolley wheels. In Lisbon, the trolley pole is lowered and the pantograph raised when wyeing on tram 28. Once the wye is complete the trolley pole is raised again. Clearances are too tight on lines 12 and 28 for pantographs.
