miyakoji
Here's a series by YT contributor hksl9sd showing a local service from Yoshida to Niigata. It's a good quality video and fairly rare, unfortunately there isn't a lot of coverage of the lines on the Sea of Japan coast. In some mirrors you can see that the rolling stock is a 115 in Second Niigata livery, such as this one: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:115-niigata-2nd-color.JPG . He seems to stop at the 6-car marker on most platforms. Notice the marker for 9-car consists! Must be for limited express, it seems like a lot of train for this area. bikkuri bahn
Nice single track line. And Niigata really is the boonies. It appears the longest regularly scheduled trains on this line are 7 car 115 series. Perhaps 9 car consists can be seen on rinji ressha or the like. Nice sounds on the video- mt54 traction motors, and the ATS bell and "kinkonkinkon" going off on approach to the loop stations. http://www.asahi-net.or.jp/~yz5m-stu/index.htm Link to comment

I was wonder why sometime when the train approaches a station I would hear a short bell ringing and then a "kinkonkinkon" going off--I heard that several times on a YT video of a local train on the Kisei Main Line going east from Shingu Station to Owase Station. Is that a common occurrence on "local" passenger trains? Link to comment

So, you could hear that on any train really. I may not be totally correct on that, someone here will know exactly, though. I actually have this sound set as my ringtone. I just couldn't resist. bikkuri bahn
Yes, it's part of the ATS system, first the bell will sound, and the driver has to acknowledge with a confirmation button within 5 seconds, turning off the bell. The chime will continue until the train makes a full stop before the red signal. Often seen occurrence on single track lines at loop stations. Link to comment
