Fun at the DC Trolly Museum

Scott made it up for a visit last night thru today. not only did he get a ride on amtrak but we headed up to the DC trolly museum (not in dc though!) for a visit before he had to get tot the train home. Was a fun time, nice little museum and we got a 15 minute PCC ride on their track loop there. Bill would have loved it, lots of creaks, groans and grinds and the trolly poll even came off and we got to watch him do is little wiggle to get it over to the curve section of catenary. was fun as i had not been there for like a decade since they moved it when the new highway went smack thru the old museum.

I can't remember numbers, but I'll check my photos later (and try to post some here). [edit] I just checked on their website, and they were running TTC 4603 (the one we rode on) and HTM 1329 (which I really wanted to ride on, but by the time it got back from a birthday-party run, we needed to leave to get me to the Metro and back to Union Station on time).

Ken -- I didn't realize you were anywhere nearby that area.

aaron,

dont ask dyslexics numbers like that! we rode the green pcc thats restored and they were also running a restored dutch tram.

ken,

its a decent little museum. surprising they can do what they do as small museums have been killed in the last decade. i work in exhibit stuff so im uber picky, but they did a nice job for a small museum. their little tram layout and physical models are very nice.

im going to talk to the director about maybe doing a jrm ttrak street car thing up there sometime, maybe with another event. also might be fun to do a japanese tram exhibit sometime!

their biggest problem is they are a bit out in the country, still very close in, but not on any beaten track at all, you have to know they are there and have a car to get to it, so i expect most dc tourists never find it. its a fun ride on the tram line out and back (maybe 1 mile?). they also give a tour of the tram barn. very knowledgeable guides, i expect volunteers.

I'm not, normally.  I used to get down to DC (from the Boston area) every year or two on business, but haven't been (except for one day trip when I didn't get out) for several years. But I went to the trolley museum a number of years back when I spent a week's vacation in DC doing nothing but museums.  Even got up to Strasburg and the Baltimore museum that trip.

I'd noticed.  :grin

Yeah, if I'm going to be in town long enough to meet, I'll definitely say something.  I'd thought about getting to the cherry blossom festival last year, but vacation schedules didn't work out.  And I suspect this year will be the same.

Cool, they finally got 1101 back in service. It's been out of use since the first Toronto PCC arrived about ten years ago.

I'm super-envious!  :grin

Yes, I'm a big fan of the PCC car in all its various forms. The Hague car is particularly fruity!

We have a PCC car at Loftus, formerly Muni No.1014. Next to our Japanese tram, it's my favourite tram in the collection.
