I was wondering, did anyone ever saw a Kiha 58 or 52 (or even Kiha 28) coupled with some Kiha 4X in service? I'm looking for examples (video/pictures) of mismatched compositions. :)

The best era for mixed consists was the seventies and early eighties, as the kiha 58's were downgraded from express services to local services.  You got quite a variety, along with mail/express railcars mixed in.

Kisei Main Line in Mie Pref:

*In more recent years, you won't see many single kiha 58 coupled with kiha 4x types, except in the colder months, as the kiha 4x lack the aux. generators required for powering the aircon on the 58's.  You need a kiha 28 or kiha 65 to provide aircon power for the 58.

*I took trip on the Kansai Main Line a few years earlier (1983 maybe) with my cousin on the way to Osaka from Nagoya, I may have taken a train such as this from Kameyama.  I do remember it was a diesel railcar, with box seating, so likely a 58.  Good times, Kintetsu locals were still all maroon then too...

I often wonder how it is that there are no problems MUing.  Great videos, Bikkuri.

I suppose it was handled with standardized specs. for dmu designs in the JNR era (same throttle settings across types?)- overall the designs were conservative, built for durability rather than to be showcases for new technology- none of the designs, save perhaps the later kiha 65, were speed demons and/or hi-power units.
