One can say that they were the natural technological descendants of the jinrikisha. One area which was fairly laced with them was the Chikugo coalfield in northern Kyushu, there they carried the miners to work and (in the beginning) the coal to market. Most of the Kyushu lines converted to steam or I/C power, then closed as the automobile took over. Some lines were electrified and are still around - parts of the Mitsui Miike and Nishitetsu railways were once horse car lines. cheers NB Link to comment
