painting painted trains

Wonder if this is how they print some of the painted trains?! i know the temporary stuff here on busses is usually a large film/decal they apply.

one big ass mobile inkjet printer!

got to watch some of our exhibit banners get printed that were like 20' x 30' and they had a giant inkjet printer that spanned a floor like 40' x 40' and you just put the fabric on the floor. quite wild to watch!

Question is, how far can you dismantle a printer, and rebuild something like this on a layout.. Instant painted trains =)

yeah just get one of those little tiny portable printers and rip it down to the frame and print head and stand it up next to your tracks!

i was always wondering how some of the painted vehicles i saw were done that did not look like they were decals. pretty cool to see. did not think they could handle the distances needed here and the change in distance on a more 3D surface like this, but i guess they can do laser range finding and adjust the nozzles on the fly. results are quite stunning!

There must be something like around here, although I don't know if it's the same technology or not. But there's an empty lot on Main Street where you'll occasionally see some large, very shiny bus or truck with fancy graphics on it.

im guessing it is, this setup looks just like the big banner painter we used in california, except vertical.

i expect there is some sort of solvent that will take off the spray paint but not the vehicle paint!
