miyakoji
Stretching the topic of the forum a bit, here's a TV drama that will air in the future (but not necessarily next season, winter 2012). Light on details but something to keep an eye on if you're interested. It's about time there's a railway-themed TV drama, although it's based on a manga. http://www.tokyograph.com/news/ekiben-hitoritabi-manga-goes-live-action/ 1 Link to comment
bikkuri bahn
Will check it out when its broadcast. Haven't watched a Japanese TV drama regularly for years (quit back in the 90's, when quality went downhill), pretty much only watch the morning news, Sunday "magazine" programs, and the odd documentary or sports broadcast anymore. Thank god for DVD rentals. Link to comment

Thank god for DVD rentals. theres lots of good ones around even now i'm currently watching princess gou with my wife. It's really good and focuses alot on the history of japans unification and has alot of tourism information at the end of some episodes about old ruined castles and key historic turning points in japan. bikkuri bahn
The historical dramas are sometimes good, I admit. There was an NHK drama set during the Russo-Japanese war era that was good, though I only saw a few episodes. JIN was also entertaining, though a bit overstretched, which is typical of stuff taken from manga. Contemporary theme drama is uniformly bad, unless you just want fluff and background noise. The police procedural Aibo is not bad, but I don't follow it. Link to comment
