Hitachi Tower Crane

Bernard,

I think this is really HO scale. there are a whole bunch of tower cranes in HO. they are very nice dicast models. the name of the company that makes many of them escapes me right now. Kibri also made a couple of HO tower crane models as well.

cheers

Thanks Bernard..

I agree with Jeff that its probably HO but I doubt its based on a prototype. Way too big to transport to a temporary site, and if permanent (such as a port) then another design might make more sense.

I think it was here that I saw some great N scale cranes, but I know that some are to be had from Europe, although they might not be suited to a Japanese layout..

Construction sites are great for layouts!  If you cannot find a suitable highrise then you get a crane and a few girders and you are there!

I'm still an optimist that Kato will release tram track with just one lane etc; so all my Tomix tram track will go into a port!! And the Tomix track is ideal for that!!! So cranes are of interest!

Thanks

Rick

What I like about the crane is that you get a couple of them, put them your layout and you don't have to buy any structures.....everything is under construction.  :cheesy

Rick,

Doh! forgot about that critter! yes thats the only one ive seen. these also come in HO. i have an old cruder HO version of this that i was thinking of using for the basis of a larger regular N scale tower crane.

really want to get into doing some construction sites. they are great scenes as theres lots of interesting details that can be done as well as mini scenes w/in the scene. also as bernard and rick pointed out its also a really cheap way to fill in a good sized space!

ive always been fascinated with cranes, especially tower cranes. something about them brings out the kid in me! when i was like 7 i made a whole series of big cranes (like 3-6' tall) out of wood and bits of metal fittings i would bring back from the scrap yard next door to where we lived (give a 7 year old a couple of screw drivers and a pair of pliers and you would be surprised at what they could bring back from a scrap yard!). i had them all articulated and driven by string to thimbles for the spindle/cranks. was grand. guess im rolling back into that phase of life again.

gotta love pro hobby, they have done some of the oddest things like this, but wonderful! really like their etched metal kits. hobbylink has been stocking more of their stuff lately.

I figure you have not aged a day!

All this talk about cranes is great. There are so many great construction vehicles in N as well as construction worker figures.. The nice part of N is that a good construction site does not require that large a footprint and is ideal for a corner of the layout..

If you are thinking about cranes (construction, or port etc) and run out of ideas, this link might help!

There is a nice looking brass one... come to think about it a nice looking port crane... maybe something to look at on a rainy day..

I don't know about you guys, but I sometimes get indecisive buying something close to what I want because if the item I want comes out then I won't use the other.. But.. you can always use a crane!!!

I feel 7 again!!

most of the ghq cranes

of course all the kato, tomytec, platz, and maruka models.

the studio mid tower crane

and a few odd HO scale cranes im thinking of using for parts for a tower crane and also barge cranes.

I have started a couple of barge cranes for an eventual harbor scene. i love barge cranes, very cool. i grew up on a dock till i was 10 and there was a large one or two always across the estuary from us and i use to love watching them do overhauls and special fits for jobs they were going out on.

so you stumbled into one of my sekret passions! luckily the big ho and 1:50 scale dicast trains are a bit too expensive to collect or i might just have a few of those!

cheers
