Yes, a mate of mine is a driver trainer in Melbourne, and he keeps me up to speed with what's been happening since the privatisation/franchising nonsense started. I bet there's a more than a few Victorians who regret electing that boofhead Kennett...

Cheers,

Mark.

I think that it might be fair to publish the name of the person who snapped/posted the photo, considering what happened to the driver. I do think that a warning or reprimand would have been better for the driver. Getting a new job isn't so easy these days and it's harder if you are as old as the driver in the photo appears to be.

Best wishes,

Grant

There you go (this is a local forum that I am a regular on hahaha):

Hey this is Calgary.. If you ain't working, it's likely by choice. ;)

In any case, it's like any other job - if you break the rules, you're done. I am also sure Calgary Transit used them as an example as well. The driver made a really bad decision and he paid for it. I don't think his age or the fact that it might be harder for him a find a job should factor into whether they should be disciplined vs. being terminated. I am sure the court of public opinion would not settle for anything less, so it's also a matter of CT's image on the line as well (there's actually been a bunch more of these types of incidents a few months prior, mostly from bus drivers).

Oh yeah? Here in Calgary, a CTrain driver was caught on photo doing a crossword puzzle earlier this year:

The mainstream media never give you the full story - the photo doesn't show what the caption states. Are there other images that actually show him writing on the page while the tram is in motion?

Cheers,

Mark

I think that one reason why workers in Japan seem to do a better job than in other countries is that working in a company is like a family. On one hand, they might take these things into consideration when you screw up so that you might be given a second chance, but you have to conform with the pack and do extra all the time. And it's the old timers who help the newbies and also keep them in line. In the West cheaper often means hiring younger workers at lower salaries while skimping on people who have been in the company longer, letting them advance by jumping to other jobs.

I post slice of life photos of train stations and workers like that. Hope that no one was embarrassed or worse, affected.

Best wishes,

Grant

gmat, I don't think anyone at JR East headquarters is looking at photos on jnsforum to bust some crew members for infractions of the rules.  However, on sites like youtube and Ompuchaneru, which are in or available in Japanese, I often wonder if drivers are ever disciplined over minor infractions caught on camera.  That would be lame.

Thanks,

Some things I won't shoot or post, but other things might be interpreted wrong. I should be more careful.

Best wishes,

Grant

Hmmm I think you can't see the picture on Beyond.ca unless you're a member, so here it is. You be the judge at what he's doing...  :cheesy

This is a Duwag U2 I think? Notice his left hand on the throttle at about the 25-30% region I believe...

usually the management don't go looking it's when they get complaints from passengeres or media get wind of it.

There have been rumours of Queensland Rail employees being disciplined for comments or video posted on Youtube or Facebook but I think it was cases of them posting things themselves that didn't go over well with management rather than something someone else had posted. Though if you're doing the crossword as you're driving you probably deserve to get caught.

I think we're pretty safe here, I don't think JR management would be aware we exist and QR managers wouldn't be seen dead looking at a site where they might actually learn something about railways.

According to the newsletter the driver send a lot of mails and sms. A distraction become delay or an accident. A driver must be professional

What scares me is the fact that he was sending those mails and SMS's and the train he was driving still made it on time, which questions how many times did he look at the line ahead?
