David
It's a repaint of what Bachmann sells as the "MDT Plymouth switcher" in North America (Plymouth made a million different small switchers, the model doesn't seem to match any exact prototype but has the general look). Kawai sells them in various freight packs with the switcher in some color and 2 Japanese prototype freight cars. MB Klein sells the switcher in American paint schemes for $20 $25 each (Ouch, price increase). And yes, it can go around the 103mm curves. It's a great value for $20, though converting to DCC requires serious milling of the frame. On a similar note, the 0-6-0 steam switcher from Bachmann can also go around 103mm curves, though you'll need to loosen up the drawbar on the tender (out of the box it resists bending that far) and the coupler on the tender could use some adjustment if you want it to actually pull anything around that tight of a curve. http://www.modeltrainstuff.com/N-Scale-MDT-Plymouth-Switcher-s/3274.htm (current stock, there are about 6 paint schemes in total) http://www.modeltrainstuff.com/N-Scale-0-6-0-s-s/1737.htm Link to comment
clem24
So does this "new" train run better than the old Bachmann? I had a few of those before I sold them all off. It was fun seeing how much it could pull hahaha. Link to comment
keiman
I've only got 3 wagons that go round 103mm curves and it pulls them fine. Going to try it with their snow plows pushing one and pulling the other. Have added extra ballast to the wagons and plows, courtesy of my local tyre fitters -old stick on wheel balance weights(bonus they were free as they usually just bin them) Link to comment
David
You may have the older version (there where 2 different builds before the current one) which was terrible. The newest version from 2004 has a new pickup scheme, black gears (not the old bachmann cracking white gears) and blackened wheels and comes in the modern Bachmann jewel case instead of a white box. You need to run them around a circle a bit to get rid of some of the blackening on the wheels (information on John Spooks listing confirms that this is standard and not just my own experience) before pickup will be good enough for yard work. The 2004 version comes in at least 2 variants - the first had rapido couplers, the second had dummy (one molded piece of plastic) knuckle couplers with spare rapidos in the box. I'd assume the next production run will have Bachmann's McHenry style couplers. The Kawai release doesn't bother with knuckle couplers and just sticks with the rapidos, but all the current releases appear to be of the newer version, judging by the wheels. Checking HS I see there is even a loco only release now - priced at $48. Given that the paint job has little Japanese about it apart from the white steps you would be just as good to go with the US release. $24.99 http://www.modeltrainstuff.com/Bachmann-N-MDT-Plymouth-Diesel-Loco-Industria-p/bac-60090.htm $48.18 http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10133127 Link to comment
