harukablue
Ive just watched a DVD about the KiHa 187 in the Tottori area, im amazed at the transmission that these units use, they sound like a road vehicle with about 6 forward gears going up and down the box, I thought most modern diesel units use a torque converter Voith system. miyakoji
I remember seeing the 187s arrive in the Okayama area to replace 181s on the Super Inaba service. They look like they accelerate at a greater rate than other rolling stock, but a quick look at the Japanese wikipedia page doesn't give me any numbers. JR East's E231 800 subseries have the fastest acceleration I can think of at 3.3km/h/s, they do through-service onto Tokyo Metro track. The 231-500s on the Yamanote line accelerate at 3km/h/s. 2.5km/h/s appears to be about normal, although JRW's new 225-5000 cars for the Hanwa line accelerate at 2.1km/h/s "or more". Seems slow. I see on the wikipedia page that the 187s have 2 450hp Komatsu engines per car and 4-speed transmissions. I wish I had one of those annual "car data" books, it might have this information. keitaro
i usually am a fan of kiha's but the 187 face is just too flat and plain...... plus i hate the yellow across the fronts lower half Link to comment
bikkuri bahn
As Miyakoji's said, the 187's have a 4 speed "power shift" transmission, built by Hitachi Nico. Here is an informative brochure: http://www.hitachi-nico.jp/nico_image/catalog/pdf/r_02.pdf *when you have 900hp per vehicle, you are going to have a high power/weight ratio, even taking into consideration power drain from auxiliaries. I reckon that still they won't match some high-po EMU's in acceleration, though. 1 Link to comment
