gmat
June 4, 2011. Only the 485 is currently running. It might be too late to ride the 183 series. The Tobu 100 Spacia is still running. Even the Golden Week Holidays didn't generate enough traffic to use the 183. Best wishes, Grant Link to comment
bikkuri bahn
Given that these services are almost exclusively tourist oriented, and thus are not essential "life-line" services, I wouldn't expect these to return to their original traffic levels until the summer (or even then not, due to the power situation). I see that the Cassiopeia and Hokutosei services have not been restored either, which gives you an idea of the priority JR East gives these trains. 1 Link to comment

gmat
This Saturday should see the inagauration of the new service. I'll try to shoot the 485 today and tomorrow night. This was from Tues. as it passed Ikebukuro Station. There were about four young men there to take photos near me. Others ma have been on the other side. Seen at Ikebukuro. Gamaro Tokaido showing region mascots. Also some of the north bound Shinkansen trains sport the red Japan logo with the same slogan. Best wishes, Grant 1 Link to comment
gmat
Taken last Friday at 17:45 and later at 18:15. The final scheduled run for the Nikko 485 series. There were about 50 people near the front of the train when it headed North. Perhaps about 7-10 more at the other end and about 6-8 on the other side of the tracks. Best wishes, Grant Link to comment
gmat
Taken on Saturday from 7:15 to 7:30, the first day for the 253-1000 series. Leaving for Nikko. There were 10-15 people scattered along the tracks and concentrated at the end. The next day, there were less people coming to shoot it. Best wishes, Grant Link to comment
gmat
What's an event without a concession stand. These are cakes or cookies, I believe. More edibles. Too bad that Bandai wasn't an officially licensed goods manufacturer, like the products shown, JR B-Train Shorties would be most popular. About three, four months ago, the JR News Day shop and kiosks had the 485 versions on sale. The could have sold a bundle of them here. Best wishes, Grant Link to comment
The_Ghan
Great post gmat. Thanks for sharing. I refer to your 8th photo of the 485 - that guy on platform 5 is actually praying to the train, right? It sure looks that way. Cheers The_Ghan Link to comment
gmat
Midday return to Shinjuku at 12:45. Departure at 13:05. Turn around to return to Nikko. Departure. Returning at 18:45. One difference between the 253-1000 and the 485 and 189 series is that it goes south after this. Probably to the Tamachi Parking Area or where ever the new Narita Express parks for the night. gmat
Thanks, The Ghan for your comments. If I could keep the 183s in service for a few more years, I would wholeheartedly pray too. Best wishes, Grant Link to comment

miyakoji
253 Series coffee mugs!? GAAAhhh, I need one of those! How many tetsudo keitai straps and keychains did they have? I've got to admit I love that stuff, but all I've got are Tokyo and Ueno keychains! Link to comment
gmat
Sorry, Miyakoji, I didn't have money to spare, so I didn't buy anything. I suspect that the mugs might be on sale at Nikko. If I have the chance, I'll get one for you. Best wishes, Grant Link to comment
gmat
You know it's gone when the scrape off the old platform markers. The unsung maintenance staff at work. The aerosol can is a portable blow torch, used to soften the pavement. Best wishes, Grant Link to comment
