Can't vouch for accuracy in this article, but I'll say this, what goes for eccentricity or unusual pastimes in the west always seems to be branded as "fetishes" by selfsame (self-congratulatory?) westerners in the Japanese context.  I give this guy some slack as he seems to be an otaku himself:

In my opinion its a pretty balanced view, although I thought the shinkansen was more punctual.

 

Personally, I like the way the Japanese embrace things.  Trains, manga, etc.  There is a certain seriousness to having fun that is only expressed by the Japanese: If you're going to have fun, take it seriously!!!
