Hi all,

I'm looking for track diagrams for rural private railways, could anyone please point me to some? Also I'm looking for diagrams for terminal stations on private railways, preferably with a car barn attached.

Cheers NB

Here's a small station, but I'm not exactly sure where it is or which line its on.

EDIT:

This seems to be a series, the entry before could be your terminal with a carbarn. Looks like there could be a freight siding in there along with the carbarn.

Bill, it's the Kaetsuno Railway's Imizu line, which once linked Toyama with Takaoka. As far as I know that was a goods siding next to the carshed.

Cheers,

Mark.

That's the Toyama Chihou (current name) Railways's Imizu Line, 600V, most of the line abandoned in 1980. Nice pictures.

As far as car barns, the track layout on most railways seems to be fairly simple, with diesel/electric railcars and double ended locomotives, there was no need for turning facilities or complicated trackwork. Given that these railways were relatively small affairs and not rich, the station and maintenance facilities could not take up the real estate say, a JNR station may command.  Typically a two car barn would be located adjacent to the station platforms, offset to take advantage of the space created by the station neck trackwork narrowing.

Meitetsu Ibi and Tanigumi Line, Kurono Station facilities- maybe a bit on the big side (pictures 3,5, and 6), but you can see the location of the car barn(s) in relation to the station:

Gakunan Railway, Gakunan Fujioka- even simpler, this facility is still in operation (pic from Aug. 1971):

Ikasa Rlwy (Okayama Pref.) Ihara Station (defunct)- a terminal station. Train departing, you can see the car barn to the right:

More pics of Ihara station facilties:

*above taken from this excellent website, with lots of pictures of rural railways nationwide in the 1960's time period:

You may not be able to find track plans for many stations, but careful study of pictures, especially taken from different angles, will give you a good idea of how these operations were laid out.

For your pleasure. :grin

BLANKETY-BLANK! I was looking for these diagrams all over the place! Thanks Toni!

NP. I was planning on putting these on the gallery a long time ago and this seemed a good enough reason to finally do it. :P

Thank you very much for the links posted, I've only now had time to give a proper reply as I arrived home feeling whacked tired yesterday.

I wanted info on track diagrams because sometime in the near future I'd like to start a layout. My idea so far is to create a module of a rural private railway terminal station, with station building, goods shed/yard, a siding to a factory (I want a reasonable amount of freight activity), some modicum of signalling (so I can run the layout using a working interlocking frame) and the car barn (essentially a GWR branchline terminus on steroids... :grin).

So far my railway's (not my total model fleet) comprises of 4 motor cars, 1 trailer coach and three locomotives with the possibility of a 5th motor car being added in the near future. There are also 4 freight cars for internal use/MOW. In a prototype situation, would everything (freight cars excepted) be housed under one roof or would there be "garden tracks" for the "excess"?

Nah Nick, I think what you're proposing is a lot more interesting than the "Got Wet & Rusted"...

Seriously, from what I've seen, even some of the larger and more solvent railways have more rollingstock than can be accomodated under cover, so for a small private rural railway having stock stabled outdoors would be entirely prototypical.

Cheers,

Mark.

How good are the photos on this site! Some of the images here are wonderfully atmospheric. This is one of my favourites, it make me smile whenever I look at it:

It's God's Wonderful Railway, please...:cussing: :grin :grin

Thank you for the suggestion. I'm still toying with ideas for track arrangements, but for the time being my idea is to put the car barn right at the end of the track, beyond the station. The number of extra "garden tracks" will depend on how many cars I can squeeze inside a Kato 23-225 enginehouse...

Nick, Don't miss the front page of that web site.

This might interest you, Nick.

How could I miss it, Bill? I just drooled over this page... :grin

The "wow" was the map of the track arrangements around Wakamatsu Municipal Tramway's enginehouse. It's just howling to be modelled using Tomix Tram Track...
