bikkuri bahn Posted April 24, 2011 Share Posted April 24, 2011 Tank cars are heavy. Fully loaded, each car's gross weight is ~60 tons. Given that the guideline for general freight trains on mainlines is a maximum of 1100 tons (i.e. 18 cars for a taki consist), the ten car consist seems realistic for double heading on a line with grades. You have to also consider siding lengths. Of course, the takis may not be loaded to their full capacity, in view of axle loading limits on the lines they have to run on. Link to comment
westfalen Posted April 24, 2011 Share Posted April 24, 2011 Going into territory where motive power might be scarce taking a second engine along even if you don't really need it is not a bad idea anyway. I guess these train's days are numbered once the Tohoku Line is reopened anyway. Link to comment
