ok so I have for a very long time been thinking about doing a spirited away diorama of the train scene going through the water in a straight line.

i was wondering what model best represents the dmu they use in it to mee the closes looks like the kiha 2 http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10047555

anyone got any other models that they think it may be based on.

The train seems to resemble some of the pre-war examples built by Nippon Sharyo, such as this one for the Kojaku Rlwy:

Also some Meitetsu types, also by Nippon Sharyo:

*sorry, don't know what  n scale models would apply.  BTW, the name of the railway in the movie is the Unabara Dentetsu(海原電鉄), or literally, the sea plain electric railway.

how'd you find the lines name?

It was in one of those on-line question services, which referred to a web site with terms from the movie.  I dunno if it's canon though.

I went for the Kiha01, Kiha02 and Kiha03 for my Ghibli modules. Not really because they resemble the train in Spirited Away, but more because they seemed to fit best running through a landscape inspired by the various movies.

I still haven't started building those modules though, too many ideas, too little spare time to realize them =)

The Meitetsu 3400 sure does look like it might have been the inspiration for the Spirited Away train though.

To quote another Aussie, "that's not a train going through water, this is a train going through water".

Ground relay, anyone?

I agree it's risky. Apart from the possiblity of flashovers, you'd have no idea what condition the track is in, or if it's even still there. No bloody way I'd take my train through something like this, at least not at that speed.

Cheers,

Mark.

To me, this train from Spirited Away mostly reminds me of Meitetsu Series 3400 (with some creative licensing of course).

Just about my favorite Meitetsu mainline train. Interesting how much it resembles an Italian elettrotreno, at least the front end...

Nick, which Elettrotreno are you speaking about? If I'm not mistaking this term is used to refer to EMUs in general.

this is so tempting to do i'd like more however to do it in HO but i don't know if i could  find a suitable model in HO and the water i would needs would be enourmous and expensive $$$$$$$

My only beef with those KiHa01/02/03 units is that they have fairly poor running qualities. Because they are so short and because of the 4 wheel pick up, I find they stall quite often unless you run them at 300 km/h...

Mainly the express ones like the ETR220, ET232, ETR240 and kin. But I used the term in a broad, general sense, as the 3400 do have an Italian air about them...
