ShinCanadaSen
Hi Guys, Sorry it's not a Japanese proto type but I saw a rerun of Robbie Coltrane's Planes and Automobiles. It was the steam engine episode and at one point they showed a real interesting locomotive that operates in Africa called a Garret Peacock ? It looked like a long engine with a wedge shaped possibly articulated water tank on the front end and a coal hopper on the back. I tried google but had no luck so I figure I got the name wrong. Anyone have any ideas? It was real cool looking and I'd love to know what it was. Thanks, Kai Link to comment
bill937ca
Its a Garratt steam locomotive (named after Herbert William Garratt.). marknewton
Ours were the best looking ones. The best looking Garratts in Queensland, maybe. Ours were not just good looking, they had all the mod-cons: cast engine beds, roller bearing boxes and big ends, power reverse, mechanical stokers and thermic syphons. They steamed like a witch, rode well and had a surprising turn of speed. Cheers, Mark. Link to comment

marknewton
I'd hate to disappoint you! Seriously though, the QR Garratts were capable, handsome engines. I have vague childhood memories of them on shed at Rockhampton. Cheers, Mark. Link to comment
ShinCanadaSen
That's an awesome looking train, Mark. Thanks to my interest I think I've learned more about steam locomotives in the last few day than I have in the last 36 years ;). In my surfing I came across http://www.project6029.blogspot.com/ . Looks interesting. Thanks again, Kai Link to comment

Some of the work on 6029 is being done up here in Sydney, at Eveleigh. The last time I was in there the cab was nearing completion. The blokes from Canberra are doing a very professional job. I spent a bit of time with this engine during my apprenticeship, I'll be very keen to see it back in traffic. Cheers, Mark. Link to comment

It would be great if they could get around the red tape that ties up today's railways and bring her up to Brisbane. Link to comment
