The coolest train commercial you will ever see!

Naw, the most head-infecting Japanese train jingle ever is definitely this one.

Oh hell yeah! JR Central has some of the best commercials!

So. Let's get hardcore on this topic.

This event must have been the most moving one for me. The transition from JNR to JR.

(7 days countdown from JR East)

(Ending ceremony of the JNR Era)

This always brings tears to my eyes. It could be of happiness, maybe because of the knowledge of the faith of the Japanese railways, maybe because of the loss of jobs, maybe because of the ending of an era... These are most probably emotions of replacement. Some for the good, some for the bad.

You wanna go hardcore on the topic?!?!  I think it was the JRC Christmas ad that helped Fukatsu Eri's popularity:

She's one of my favorite Japanese actresses, and I love that '80s look. (Still haven't seen Akunin, unfortunately)

Fully and wholeheartedly concur.

An interesting story about the Fukatsu Eri commercial- the original premise of the story (reflecting the bubble era "tradition"/mentality of the time), was that the couple would meet at the station and then spend an amourous Christmas Eve in a nice hotel.  However, the commercial producers were aware that JR Tokai's conservative management wouldn't take too well to that storyline, so they pitched the explanation that once the couple met at the station, they went their separate ways, or something like that....  Of course everyone outside of the boardroom knew the original (and realistic) interpretation of the commercial, but the management greenlighted the airing, and the JR Tokai "Christmas Express" campaign grew to be a great success.

Just got to thinking, that station is on a curve... Hamamatsu?  I'm not too familiar with that area, I never really found much scenery to enjoy there so I usually fell asleep.

LOVELY!!! Yes, tears in the eyes...what a send-off! And some interesting scenes...railcars on the Nansatsu Railway (Kagoshima Kotsu)...last day on the Igasa Railway...but the real eye-waterer is the moment when the railwaymen come together to sing "Auld Lang Syne" around "Moomin" to the tune of the steam loco's whistles...  :sad10:

It was a success for the company/companies, but tens of thousands of people lost their jobs in the resulting streamlining, in a country where jobs are often for life. And it was the end of an era in terms of a transition to newer rolling stock, as well as the ending of most freight (although that happened a couple of years earlier).

I said before that watching this ad (the OP's ad, I mean) made me kind of sad, because I knew it couldn't be made right now.

My wife (who is Japanese) just watched it (independently) and said "this makes me feel like Japan will be ok."

So hopefully it has that effect there too.

They had a JR Kyushu commercial at my station in Fukuoka. It was short but I found the music and the general feeling so cool that I used to just seat there, and watch it a couple of times.

Here it is, it's not exactly the same but it's still cool!

Unlike the kids in the movie, I didn't "high five" the conductor in front of the Yufuin no Mori, I was just gently asked to take another train as this one was full and reservation only.

Big train disappointment on my journey: went 2 times to Yufuin, never rode the Yufuin no Mori... :-(
