Nick_Burman
Culled from Wikipedia... ED 5101 and 5102 were built for the Jyozankei Railway (BB's would have been local line) in Hokkaido, where they bumped the elderly ex-JGR Baldwin 2-6-0 which once worked the line. When the Jyozankei closed in 1969 the two locos were sold to the Nagaden (the picture was taken on the Yashiro line) where they worked another decade until Nagaden gave up freight service. The locos were then sold once more to Echigo Kotsu who set them to work on the Nagaoka line until 1995 when that line was closed and the locos were cut up. With their styling and blue paint these locos bore a large resemblance to JNR machines. Cheers NB 2 Link to comment
marknewton
Pity they were scrapped, they were attractive locos. Nice photo, too. I like the very neat way the bales of hay(?) are stacked and tarped in the open wagons. I'm guessing that the last vehicle in the train is a Tora 90000 - any idea what they were intended to carry? Cheers, Mark. Link to comment

Cheers, Mark. Mark, I think the tarped loads are cut timber - the load looks too regular for hay. And the ToRa 90000 is a woodchip/wood scrap carrier, which would tally with the timber loads. bikkuri bahn
ED 5101 and 5102 were built for the Jyozankei Railway (BB's would have been local line) in Hokkaido, Yes, indeed. In fact the Jyotetsu's Toyohira Station was at a location just a 15 minute walk away from my place of residence. A picture from recent times (the former platform area), the building was used by the Joutetsu Bus Company (Tokyu group) as an office(?). It was torn down a few years ago to be replaced by a high rise block of flats: http://hirot.air-nifty.com/railwaychildren/images/107_0765.JPG In happier times: http://members3.jcom.home.ne.jp/mohayuni/EC50/2104.jpg http://park7.wakwak.com/~oya-p/train/data/23.jpg http://homepage2.nifty.com/sl-e/bekkan_omoide/jyouzannkei/JYOUTETUTUSAYONARA21.jpg Link to comment

bikkuri bahn
ED5001 at Toyohira in May, 1957. The area around the station was still relatively undeveloped, this being the western terminus of the Sapporo streetcar line across the Toyohira River: http://www5.kcn.ne.jp/~namachan/g%20jyoutetu%20ed5001%20toyohira5705.jpg In shed at Higashi Sapporo: http://sakikawa.michikusa.jp/ed500.jpg *edit: above doesn't work, try this: http://sakikawa.michikusa.jp/jyouzannkei1.html 1 Link to comment

Thanks BB! *edit: don't forget to look into the other "goodies" in the site: Kusakaru Keiben, Nikko Kido (look for the "phone booth" pulling a tank car!), etc... Cheers NB Link to comment
miyakoji
There's something EH10-ish about that. I like it, too bad they got the torch. Link to comment
