must be a bit disconcerting for the japanese to see side wide commuter cars. i mean i know they are familiar with the the shinkasens being wide and all, but a normal train set. they're probably thinking, "lord, those americans have fart asses to need such a wide train"

Apparently the M8's are 4" wider than the earlier M7 types, which have to be narrow in order to pass LIRR clearances, which the M8's don't need to meet. BTW, the M8's are 250mm (~9.8 inches) wider than the JR East E233 series (3200mm vs. 2950mm).
