scott
I thought it might be useful to have a thread with photos (or links to photos) of public facilities in Japan -- schools, government buildings, post offices, city parks, hospitals, etc., etc. It's pretty easy to find pictures of commercial areas, but pictures of public facilities seem a little less common. Of course, I've never been to Japan, so I can't offer any pictures of my own. But here are some links to a few examples: Sapporo City Hall: Kanazawa City Hall: Kakunodate Post Office: Miyano Post Office, Kyushu: Link to comment

scott
Heh--I think most people would think the same thing, but I couldn't think of a better term! Link to comment
westfalen
'Facilities' don't get much more public than this one at Abashiri station in 1994, when I was there last year I noticed they have been refurbished and made more private. Do fire stations count as public facilities? The Abashiri fire department, again in 1994, with firefighters going for their daily jog through the local park. The last shot is an old post office in Otaru converted into a store, which according to the sign sells groceries and old clothes! I'll see what else I can find. 1 Link to comment
bikkuri bahn
The last shot is an old post office in Otaru converted into a store, which according to the sign sells groceries and old clothes! Likely a mislabel (no Japanese would notice anyway). It's a "zakkaya", or store selling knicknacks, and used clothing (furugi) popular among some young people. Link to comment
scott
Do fire stations count as public facilities? Definitely! Good example, and nice pictures. But I can't believe anybody ever used that restroom. Link to comment

But I can't believe anybody ever used that restroom. When ya gotta go, ya gotta go. Another one on the Platform at Takasaki. Post Office at Aterazawa. Police station at Tamachi, Tokyo. Police box in Tokyo, can't remember where, somewhere along the Arakawa tram line. 1 Link to comment
