scott
Nice HD video of 583s in green-ish surroundings. According to the translated title, this is "Oh Idzu color liner pinch runner Kokutetsu West Ban'etsu Line 583 Series (with horn) 2010 cut 5 / 8." A 719 heading for Koriyama shows up briefly. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3cU8AF4028w 1 Link to comment
stevenh
Right, the first three Kanji "国鉄色" means "Original JNR Colour" .. i.e. not the typical Aizu Liner Red with Akabeko plastered all over it. So this is the Aizu Liner prior to the 485 Akabeko Red model. This was also seen by Shashinka on the Aizu webcam back in the day. Link to comment
scott
Wasn't the Aizu Liner a daytime service? I'm just wondering why they were using 583s. (Not questioning you, of course--just wondering about the choice of rolling stock.) Link to comment
disturbman
I thought they used both type of trains on this service, Series 485 and Series 583. The Akabeko livery go back to 2006 (and it's not the first livery of the Aizu Liner which started in 2005 if I'm not wrong) and Aaron caught the Series 583 in 2009. (Not questioning you, of course--just wondering about the choice of rolling stock.) These, and JR West's 583-based 419, are often used for daytime services. I haven't been on 583s and I don't know in what way exactly the 419s are different, but it looked like 419s still have the beds, they're just folded up all the time. JR West uses them between Maibara and possibly as far north as Naoetsu via the Hokuriku Main Line. scott
Interesting--I guess this means I can run our Tomix 583 without turning the lights off. :-) HS had a Micro Ace 419 in red Hokuriku livery sitting around for a long time. Fortunately somebody bought it, so I don't have to work to ignore it anymore. Link to comment
bikkuri bahn
The 583/581 series were dual-purpose units, with seating arrangements suitable for daytime limited express services. When they were introduced in the late sixties, this enabled intensive service utilization, with an overnight run being able to be turned around for a return daytime run back to originating terminal, saving a long layover. I have a nice memory of riding a 583 series on a Hatsukari daytime service Ueno~Sendai back in the early eighties, just prior to the opening of the shinkansen. *nice video- Ltd. express rolling stock running on single track has an aesthetic- the scene at Bandaicho Station (0:50~), with the 719 unit, is one I especially like- single track railway operation in action, notice how the signals change in concert at 1:03.
