Nick_Burman
Elderly motor 101 drops ballast on the Jomo Tetsudo NW of Tokyo. The antics of the shovellers at the end of the clip have to seen to be believed - the Japanese might be Japanese but they are still human beings... Cheers NB 3 Link to comment
Bernard
If it was only so easy to ballast on layouts as in the video! 1 Link to comment
disturbman
I'm not convinced about the efficiency of the method. It looks like they are ballasting the grass around the existing ballast. I was also shocked by the two guys cleaning up the mess with shovels, I think brooms would have been more efficient. Link to comment
bikkuri bahn
The antics of the shovellers at the end of the clip have to seen to be believed I would do the same thing- it's just being considerate of the motorists who use this grade crossing (in Japanese- omoiyari). As far as the ballast laying, I think it's more to build up the shoulders of the roadbed. Ballast under the track is more the job of a ballast tamping machine. Link to comment
westfalen
They didn't seem to be dropping much ballast in places almost as if the track inspector said "I want two pieces here, three pieces over there...", but what caught my eye was the immaculate condition of old 101 even though it's relegated to M of W duties. I've got to do a trip and take a look at some of these small private lines close to Tokyo, I tend to ignore them for ones further away. Link to comment

Westfalen, the fact that 101 is immaculate is no coincidence - when she is not in MOW service she is used in ordinary scheduled service during certain weekends. When this happens it is usually standing room only... Cheers NB Link to comment

marknewton
Some photos of this activity are here. As BB says, it looks more like they are consolidating the ballast shoulders. http://sl-taki.blog.so-net.ne.jp/archive/c2300446751-1 Cheers, Mark. Link to comment
