So, some of us think it's time to expand and slightly reorganize the threads here; after months of careful planning, partisan finger-pointing, negotiations, pleading and other sorts of angry brutishness among the administrators and moderators, we have come to the following schema. Please let us know what you think! The poll will run for a week, and if a majority of voters say "yea", we'll move to the new schema then. Mind, we'll be manually rummaging through all the threads, relocating things as appropriate, so the board will experience a little turmoil during the change, but it won't be much.

Given that the bulk of the posts are in relation to N Scale, what will actually be in the category labelled "N Scale"?

Clearly, you are not going to allocate all the non-Z scale posts to that category, otherwise what goes into the other categories?

What goes into N Scale that wouldnt go into (say) DCC, layouts etc etc?

Hi Alpine,

I think it's more of sorting things out to find the information your seeking easier. For example, as the forum stands now, if I needed infromation on how to install a decoder on a Shankansen train, I would have to search through an entire category, but if you put all that information in one category, DCC & Electronics, I know exactly where to look. In the long run it will make your search easier. As for N scale, its more to sort out information on other scales. It just to make information and interests easier to find.

Alpine,

Good comments.

Perhaps the name is misleading; I was thinking the N Scale forum would be for discussions particular to N scale rolling stock and accessories (track etc); The Layouts forum would be for people to discuss non-scale specific things; showing off a layout, or frame construction techniques, for example.

And the catch all wouldn't be just Z: It would also include H0 and T (and maybe a little 0?).

We are open to suggestions if you have recommendations.

I think I would make a distinction between new releases and advance reservations being taken.  Particularly with the economy being stormy manufacturers and dealers may limit stock on hand or even just order only the pre-orders-- to reduce risk if they feel the stock may not move anyways.

Did you know there is an extension cable for the new Tomix TCS  electric turntable (spelled truntable on Hobby Search)?  ;D

Is this a request for two different boards, or simply for people to clearly label their posts within that one board?

75 members and only 6 votes? We can do better than this! Two more days left for voting, folks! This might be more important than the United States election day coming up!

Yea it is! We'll begin reorganization today; please bear with us as we relocate some now-off-topic threads to their appropriate home  :)

One thing that seems to be a little scrambled is how to treat train shows domestic and Japanese.  There are Japanese train layouts at trains shows in the off-topic section.  How is a Japanese train layout off topic?

I find that most train shows, especially in smaller communities are extensions of model railroad clubs usually as a fund raising operation.  There are a few commercial train shows but these are rarer. Perhaps Club News should include train show reports.

I put a Hobby Search JAM 2008 Report in the New Releases Section because it is at shows like JAM that the new products are previewed in Japan.  In many cases vendors like Tomytec, Greenmax and Tomix display prototypes. Its a different type of train show, in some senses almost a trade show although I think JAM is dominated by model railroaders.
