train shed

yeah and it doesn't blend in with a japanese area either. the shed from tomix does but missing 2 tracks .. i guess it's only $16 for 2 might order 2 tomix ones and see if i can mod the wall and connect them together.

Keitaro,

the Kato engine house actually can do 4 tracks by putting two side by side if you are using the 49.5mm spacing base (they give you three different bases configurations). roof edges match up flush. just have to do a small styrene connector strip between the two buildings on the end walls.

I like the green roof!

But that's what spray paint is good for.  Almost any plastic model will look better if you take it apart, scrub it with an old toothbrush and some lukewarm soapy water, rinse well and then paint the pieces with cans of flat spray paint, to kill the "plastic" shine and give the model more "realistic" colors.  And since you're just applying large swaths of one color, the skill level required is minimal; just don't spray too close or too far away, and let each coat dry a little (like 30 seconds) before applying the next so it doesn't build up volume and run.

An airbrush is even better, as it gives you more colors (mix your own blends) and more control, but it's not required.

I haven't done this for my buildings (yet), but it's one of the many "to do" items for my layout, and it's why none of my buildings have signs on them yet.

Greenmax has an engine shed (designed around the Tomix track spacing) that comes unpainted.

The Greenmax kits are more difficult to assemble than Tomix, more individual pieces and glue versus snap-lock connections, but this also means that it's easier to achieve a realistic kitbash.

the green max engine house does give you two pairs of ends for the building, one with track doors and the other just building ends and the unit comes in two sections so you can make a shorter (3 roof bays) engine house with 4 bays out of the kit with some kitbashing to weld the roof and end walls together. Like mudkip says since its a glue together and paint model its a bit easier than the tomix or kato to do modifications like this.

unfortunately OOS at HS and not on HW, which makes me think it may not be very available anymore (although i do see it popup once and a while on ebay).

the greenmax factory

http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10007620

is basically half the engine house (3 roof sections long) with some extra piping and details. it comes with 3 end wall sections, one for two tomix spaced tracks, one with a large roll up door and one with a small door. these are around a lot with retailers still and on ebay. or try backordering via hw

other option is the green max 2 track car barn.

http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10007672

could probably meld the two gables together. problem is the opening is only 60mm. you could just barely squeeze in 2 kato tracks at 33mm spacing (#4 turnouts) and the difference between in the center of a double opening would add about 7mm to the spacing between the two sets of track unless you carved some out of the middle. but arent you using tomix track? then its just wont work with turnout spaces. the base that comes with it has two tracks a 30mm spacing, dont know what they use to get that track spacing!

bennie of this kit is you get a mow train, car washer and side building thrown in with the economy kit!

cheers

Doh! totally forgot about the other greenmax train shed!

http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10007596

dont know if this one gives you extra ends so you could put the two side by side, but bet they do like the factory and other train shed buildings. anyone have this one?

This is indeed a good option.  The Greenmax #19 kit is designed so it can be built side-by-side.  When the roof pieces connect, there is a little gap (like the Kato) but Greenmax provides a little matching styrene piece to fill that gap at the ends.  All this is shown right in the instructions, so it is very simple to do.

The kit comes with 2 open and 2 closed ends.  The sides come in 2 pieces as well.  This means you can make the standard 310mm two track garage, or you can make a 155mm four track garage from a single kit.  With multiple kits you could expand the garage in length or tracks.. 3 kits could get you an "L" or "U" shape garage with two tracks having 310mm coverage and the next two with only 155mm for smaller engines or rolling stock.

Also, the Greenmax #19 shed is built to Kato Unitrack standards (33mm track spacing) where as the Greenmax #38 (sawtooth shed) is set at the 37mm Tomix Fine Track spacing.

Had you thought about scratch building one, it's not so hard these days because there is such a huge selection of parts now.  You could then make it exactly how you want it.  Find a picture on the net of one you like and go for it

Yeah train sheds are a great thing to try scratch building. i have a few prototype pictures and even an interesting japanese engine house someone scratch built ive collected from the web. contact me off list if you are interested in seeing them.

you can also get the old bachmann car repair shop cheap a lot of the time (i picked up a pile of them for about $4 ea shipped). While not really japanese looking, they are a great source of windows and corrugated siding and roofing to do some scratch building or kitbashing from.
