C11 Restoration

So after visiting the Oigawa Railway up near Shizuoka (Official Link) I decided it was time to purchase a C11. I'd already had the brown pax carriages to pull behind it... so it should be simple, right? Well it turns out recently there is an awesome model of it by Kato available at NewHall Station but the price is just past borderline (and our aussie currency is currently dropping too low.)

So... as soon as I saw one on eBay I snapped it up with Buy It Now for a very cheap price.... Here it is:

Now, that was the shot from the eBay auction... I instantly realised it was the C11, but the colour put me off... maybe a special Kato run? ... The price still pushed me to purchase it...

Anyway, it arrived yesterday and, to my horror, it has been repainted army-green and one of the smoke deflectors had snapped off in transit... the second falling off not long after removing from the package.

Anyway, this is the 2002 model and is in need of love... I purchase a bottle of Mineral Turpentine 1hr ago and started soaking and tooth-brushing off the paint... the results are looking promising and I'll add commentary and photos as i progress...

Am back at work now, so I'll continue this in the evening :)

Photos, please! Looking forward to your reports. I have more than once bought wargames models from eBay to rehabilitate (PineSol to the rescue!) with mixed results, so do keep us informed. This is a subject one hears about in model railroading too rarely, so specific procedures would be great to hear.

The paint came off the cab at lunch time... but scrubbing after soaking is proving to be of no use.... Time spent soaking is slowly being extended... currently around 15mins per bath but the scrubbing is still not working.
