bikkuri bahn
Will ride tomorrow Hiroshima-Shin Osaka. Currently in Hiroshima to see the JR Freight Open House tomorrow. A little too much beer with the delicious okonomiyaki tonight, so the typing is slow and error prone.... Link to comment

miyakoji
JR West has had various consists on the Kodama services. These 500s are running in 8-car sets, but the older rolling stock, 0 and 100 series trains, exist or have existed in configurations of 4 or 6 cars, as far as I know. Link to comment

Yes, for a normal, sane person, but I'm a railfan, thank you As I said on another thread, there's nothing wrong with stopping at every station and watching the Nozomis and Hikaris overtake you. And it would still be a fast trip by the standards on any other country in the world. Link to comment
bikkuri bahn
Caught Kodama #744, a Hakata-Shin Osaka service, at Hiroshima Station yesterday. Had a unreserved ticket, which is fine as the carriages were only partially (20~30 percent) full. Unfortunately, there was no refreshment trolley service, so at an extended (7 min) stop at Mihara(to allow two faster trains to pass- "timed overtakes"), I went down to the station concourse and bought myself a cup of coffee from a vending machine. A nice leisurely (2.5 hour) ride to Shin-Osaka, albeit it seemed 40 percent or so was in tunnel. Link to comment
westfalen
I always visit 7-11 or Lawson's and stock up on supplies for the trip. A leisurely 2.5 hours to travel 340km, ah Japan. Link to comment
miyakoji
Do they have the bento carts on Kodamas? I remember when it was brought around in the Nagoya area, it would often be miso katsu. Link to comment

Apparently not on JR West Kodama services, or at least the mid-day service I was on. Miso katsu bento sounds good...One of the enjoyments of travel in Japan by train is sampling the local specialty bento (ekiben). I always visit 7-11 or Lawson's and stock up on supplies for the trip. Me too, but one of my rituals is to buy a cup of hot coffee whenever I ride a limited express or shinkansen service- a simple indulgence I enjoy immensely- nothing like a cuppa joe while watching the scenery pass by. Maybe they think most people won't be on the train long enough to eat a bento as those going long distances would normally catch an Hikari or Nozomi. My favorite thing on the shinkansen is the girl coming through the train selling ice cream. At least in Japan if the timetable says you've got seven minutes to get off and get a cup of coffee you know you will have seven minutes. Link to comment
