bikkuri bahn
JR West Kusatsu Line, between Tsuge (junction with Kansai Main Line) and Kusatsu (junction with Tokaido Main Line). Nice single track railway that once was a pretty busy cross country route (for example Himeji-Toba, or Kyoto-Nagoya)- the Shinkansen-focused railway network "did in" these interesting services (circa 1965). miyakoji
Don't forget the connection with the Shigaraki Railway at Kibukawa. They had a wreck in 1991 that you'd think would have put them out of business, but they're still rolling. According to the English wikipedia page, the original plan for the line was for it to extend to Kamo. I don't know what the route would have been, but between the Kusatsu Line, Kansai Main Line, Nara Line, and (former?) Kintetsu Iga Line, that would have been a lot of rail in a pretty sparsely populated area. Link to comment
