marknewton
In the Summer 2010 issue of the Continental Railway Journal (No.162), there is a very interesting article about the JNR C56 class 2-6-0s and the Thai-Burma "Death Railway". The author David Dixon gives the historical background to their design and construction, and a neat description of the method used to regauge them for use on the metre gauge Thai railway. Recommended. Cheers, Mark. Link to comment
ToniBabelony
Ah. I'll be looking for it next time I'm in the magazine shop in Cologne! My great-grandfather worked on this railway line and had his Achilles beaten to a pulp after trying to flee, so it's somewhat part of the family history... Not a good one, but still. Link to comment
quinntopia
Wow Toni, interesting fact. That's amazing. My grandfather was a bit more fortunate as he was in the intelligence division making 3 dimensional rubber terrain maps of the pacific islands for the US invasion operations. Link to comment
marknewton
Toni, I had an uncle who was there, so I understand what you're saying. It was a bad business for all concerned. All the best, Mark. Link to comment
ToniBabelony
Ah well, it's over and done I guess. Strange fact is that I've studied Japanese culture, language and history at university and have a Japanese girlfriend. History is there to be learned from and not to derive hatred from (IMO hate is something unnecessary, it's better to dislike :P ). The Ooigawa-RR bought a C57 from Thailand a few years IIRC: http://www.uraken.net/rail/chiho/oigawa/C56.html'>http://www.uraken.net/rail/chiho/oigawa/C56.html Also, bookmark this website! It is awesome and very very handy! I use it almost every day: http://www.uraken.net/rail/ Link to comment
