Tomix EF63 releases

Anyone know what the differences are between the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd type releases of the Tomix blue EF63 sets? I already have all 3 brown ones, and the 1st and 2nd release. I almost pulled the trigger when the 3rd type was available today as a used item on Popondetta but couldn't exactly justify it if the only difference was going to be different loco #s. Too late now cause someone bought it (maybe someone here?). I am sure these things will pop up all the time, though I think it's the first time I've actually seen the 3rd type.

LOL including a pair of Kato EF63's, that's 6 pairs of EF63 in my fleet. BTW for those who don't have the Tomix model, it's one of the best running non-flywheel equipped locos that I own. It operates amazing at low speed.

Modelling the Usui Pass, are we?

I didn't know that Tomix had a model of the EF63, in fact. My guess, is if they are offering 3 types, they will probably align with the descriptions here:

Hahaha nope.. I don't think I have enough space for something like this. Thanks for the link!

Tomix had a whole series of "Usui Toge" models to commemorate the closing of that line section, I assume. This series actually had "Usui Toge" markings on the box slip cover. Some of the models with the markings are all 6 EF63 releases, KIHA58 set (can't remember the set # but it was a set of 4 + 3 add on), series 169 Nagano colors, etc... Coincidentally, I don't think either of the 489 models (bonnet-type Hakusan and Asama) had the markings.

Hi,

Tomix issued a Kiha57 set and add on not a Kiha58.  Apparently there are differences with the bogies if I remember.  I have the 4 car set.

Tony of JR Models and I did think about a layout based on the Usui Pass but it did not progress due lack of space and more importantly difficulties with coupling and uncoupling the EF63s from the various types of EMU.

Yes, it is VERY difficult to couple and uncouple. I have NO idea how they do it so fluidly in the Tomx World videos. The biggest problem is that the coupler on the locos cannot stay centered and they move all around. If I did have a layout, then the EF63s would be connected permanently to my EMUs.
