Water mirror(?) in Hokuriku

I'd like to show my picture that I took in Hokuriku.

It's (special) night express "Noto".

Nice shot. I've never seen a photo of Noto that wasn't a 489-series. What series train is that in the photo?

It's 485-series 1000-"bandai(How do you say "bandai" in English?)"

in Niigata car(?) center.

It usually runs as "Hokuetsu" or "Inaho".

And another photo is 583-series "Kitaguni"

Thanks, YOMPAQ!

I think "bandai" translates to "number", but we would just say "485-1000 series". "485-series 1000-subseries" or "485-series type 1000" would both be OK too, but they are a little awkward. We would never say "485-series number 1000" because "number" seems to imply a particular serial number. Thus, we would say: "KUHA 485 number 1045" for "クハ485形1045番台".

But wasn't the Noto a night train? Does the 485-1000 have sleeping accomodations?

One of my favorites!

Yes it was…and the 489 certainly didn't have sleeping accommodations. Noto is (was) all coach seating…whee!

Bleah--I did the night-train-in-coach-seats thing once, and it wasn't much fun. Of course, it *was* Amtrak, so the leg supports on the seats didn't work.

I saw this trainset (or a similar one) in Nagaoka Station, when "Akebono", which I was riding, was making an extended stop to exchange motive power.  I wanted to get out on the platform and photograph it, but the doors were closed   I did notice that Noto was pretty devoid of passengers, which was no different from when it ran daily with the bonnet type 489's.
