bikkuri bahn
JR East recently unveiled the name of its planned (autumn debut) tourist diesel railcar. It will be called "Resort View Furusato" The name was chosen from 2165 entries submitted by the public in a contest. The railcar is planned to be a hybrid diesel type, two car unit. It will run on the Oito Line as well as the Iiyama Line, in Nagano Prefecture. Pdf with artist's conception of the railcar: http://www.jrniigata.co.jp/press/100423furusato.pdf *front end is somewhat E233-like, which is not a bad thing. Also, similar railcars are planned for Tohoku area lines, such as the Gono Line. Link to comment
scott
Big windows are nice. But why is JR East running a diesel on the Oito line? Is it going to run all the way through the JR West section as well? I wish they'd post the other 2,164 suggested names for us to chuckle over. :-) Link to comment
ToniBabelony
Interesting front design! It could easily be a European design for PKP (Polish National Railways) or something like that. I kinda like it Link to comment

miyakoji
Yeah, looks good. I'm trying to remember, have any of these other 'resort' trains been new stock? All the others that I can think of are refurbished locals, KiHa40s especially come to mind. It seems that JRE has lots of money to invest in new equipment, it's like they buy more new stuff than all the other JR companies combined. Link to comment

David
Ok, first, in the second video look at the guy standing on the edge of the EF64 while it takes off down the track! Second, those big red reflector that don't seem to be flush - are those just temporary while it's being pulled, like when a tow truck puts those lights on your car? Finally, what's up with the 2 TAKI tank cars being pulled with it. Are they just trying to be ironic given that it's a hybrid, or are they so poor that they have to hitch hike to their destination, tagging onto whatever freight is going in the right direction? You always see those lights or reflectors on EMUs or DMUs being moved "dead" during equipment moves. Link to comment
bill937ca
Ok, first, in the second video look at the guy standing on the edge of the EF64 while it takes off down the track! Just a standard shunting move. I see that all the time in Belleville when CN shunts in the yard across from the Via Rail station. More shunting of this train, but at the Tokyu plant with several crew members on the front end. Link to comment
David
Just a standard shunting move. I see that all the time in Belleville when CN shunts in the yard across from the Via Rail station. Just seemed crazy dangerous - the train is moving at quite a good speed over a distance, and he's standing on this tiny little step at the front of the train. If he slips and falls it won't just be a 2 foot fall from a moving object, he's likely to get crushed by the train too. Link to comment

Judging how the TaKi cars were stored together with the train, I suspect they are there for purpose of adding extra brake force when the moment comes for it to be moved onto the main at full track speed. A QR employee caught riding on the step of a moving vehicle would risk losing his job, but then our safety fanatical management gives out final warnings for not holding the handrail when you walk up the stairs in the office.
