Hakodate Main Line 1990

We continue my June 1990 tour of Japan leaving Hakodate on a Limited Express bound for Sapporo. However we leave the train at Oshamambe, where there were more red Kiha 40's than you could poke a stick at, and head up the Hakodate Main Line toward Niseko meeting a couple of opposing services along the way. An extended stop at Kuromatsunai to cross a conditional train that wasn't running that day gave us time for a walk around the bustling community, the joys of traveling by all stops local trains.

 

Next installment, the reason we took the long way to Sapporo, C62 3.

Never mind the kiha 40's, there are some real gems in that segment.  Kiha 22's, a rare kiha 24, waki 10000 palletized cargo bogie box cars, and the best, that eight car kiha 56 school charter train at Kuromatsunai- a symphony of dmh17 sound! Truly a throwback to when JNR ran long distance diesel expresses, such as the express Soya which ran on this very line. All gone now from the Hokkaido railway scene...
