...and where did it range? Apparently this picture is from Osaka.

That's the express Yunokuni, which operated between Osaka and Kanazawa, using the Tokaido and Hokuriku Main Lines.  The 475 series pictured was a dual DC/AC unit, and the rose pink and cream color scheme was the standard JNR color for express emu trains running in DC/AC territory.
