Kystbanen/togdillen and modeltog.nu(Gentofte) are the biggest shops and all in the "stor københavn" (big copenhagen) area , the rest is all "Sjæland"(Sealand) .

So today i went to check two store in Copenhagen(CPH).

 

The first was i visited today the Stoppel Hobby

 

(www.stoppel.dk).

 

 

The public transport is realy good that area when the stores has located a big green house basement. 10 minutes on foot the nearest bus maybe 15 min to the metro station.

Few words in the goods in the store:

 

Lot of makets(plane,ships, etc.), i see lot of Herpa, preiser vehicle. they have more Roco Minitanks military vehciles, i see few vehicle CPH oriented Buses. They have giving advice if You needed. they have lot of books, and press in the makeing makets. and they have some railway modelling magasines. inside the store they selling lot of building materials and other accessories. 

 

So we arrived in the good part.

 

The second store i visited today is the Tog Center. (www.togcenter.dk)

 

If You arriving the S-Tog(like the german S-bahn system) its about 10~15 minutes on walk. lots of local buses has passing front of the stores. But i think the S-Tog is fastest way if You want to visit more than one store in a day. They have two type of modells, New and second hand. They have both type of huge variety of the all scales 1 to Z. When they bought the second hand modell they checking it (i think maybe servicing a modells). The employees realy helpfull for the customers. 

 

The Variety of the goods:

 

They have both of the mainlines of the H0 modelling, AC/DC, lot of media in the topic. i mean dvds, magazines, VSHs, books, layouts plans, etc.  Under the G/LGB scale each scale has subsantive show-chase. The second hand modells stored one other room. They have lot of building materials in any scales. they have lot of good stuff in the ww2 lovers in 1/87. Realy good details on that vehicles and they all of that weathered

AKIHABARA MODEL TRAIN SHOP MAP

Over the years I have done much searching and wondering of the streets of Tokyo and other cities in Japan looking for model train shops with a large selection, and discounted merchandise.  My search revealed that the best location in Japan for selection, quantity, and pricing was Akihabara.  This result was actually suspected from the beginning, but on every trip I have attempted to disprove it without success.  In my opinion there is no better place in Japan and arguably the world for model rail road enthusiast than Akihabara (my opinion) within a 15 minute walk.  In response I created a google map with the location of every model train shop (17) that I have found in Akihabara (search 98% done).  The google map is public and additions/corrections are welcomed.  If you are a model train enthusiast on a short trip to Tokyo, you only need this map to get all of your shopping done in a few hours.  If time permits I would also recommend you visit Nakano Broadway which is on the north side of Nakano Station.  There are 2 second hand model train shops on the 2nd Fl., 1 on the 3rd Fl., and 1 on the 4th Fl.  Just ask anyone outside of Nakano station where Nakano Broadway is and just walk the floors to locate the shops.  They all have an excellent selection of common and rare second hand train sets in mint condition.  The largest selection and best prices will be found in these two locations (Akihabara/Nakano).

 

I have also compiled an excel spread sheet containing detailed information for each of the shops (i.e. name, address, tel, etc.).  I am 95% done and will make it available as soon as I am done.  I need one more trip to Akihabara to verify some information for a couple of the shops.    Hopefully the map and information are a welcomed contribution.

 

Any word on the excel sheet?

Resurrecting a dead thread:

 

I visited quite a few model train stores on my trips, and will add all of them in a google map, with descriptions of the store and classifications. Some stores do not sell N Gauge, these I will add as well, but then in the "does not sell N gauge" class. Mostly Europe at first, and also a bit of Japan.

 

I have never visited the US so can't link any there.

Unfortunately google maps app on the iPad doesn’t like the link, but if you put it straight into the browser it works with google maps web.

Actually RG Rokko is the one I have not visited but still included on this map. I plan to visit it this summer however. Maybe I should make a category "not yet visited" or something.

 

Also on my iPad when I click the link, the google maps app opens with my points and the legend in it...

hmm I still get couldn’t open map when I try the link above. It does try opening google maps app and gives message but works if I paste the link into safari and it loads google web map. Odd

A few updates based on just completed trip to Japan, as I found the map to be useful. And sorry I don't know how to update the map...

 

1. For Japan, if you want to search for a shop in a place, in Google Maps, try searching for 鉄道模型  (you can copy/paste this text). This is spoken "tetsudou mokei" and means model railroad. This can help, and I found Google Maps a lot more useful than Apple Maps.

 

2. Tokyo - there is Models IMON store in Oimachi, 3 minute walk from the JR Station, which itself is one stop south from Shinagawa on Keihin Tohoku line. If you fly into/out of Haneda, this may be the closest shop to visit if you have as little as an hour to spare.

IMON is a department store, Models IMON is located on floor 3A.

Typical new store stuff, great selection, helpful people, reasonable prices, tax free available. By reasonable prices I mean 1-2% higher than Plaza Japan (but then take out 10% tax, and no delivery fees).

 

3. Hiroshima - Edion Hiroshima Main Store. It is right in the city center (5 minutes walk from the Atomic Bomb Dome, 2 minutes walk from the Kamiya-cho-higashi tram stop). From the train station, probably about 15 minutes by Hiroden tram lines 1, 2, 6 (orange, red, yellow). There are two Edion buildings next to each other. You want to go into the Main (or East) building, go to 8th floor. The model train store is branded as NeverLand.

Selection is great and similar to Tokyo IMON Oimachi, Tokyo TAM TAM, etc. Prices are reasonable (same as IMON Oimachi) and tax free is available. There is a shelf dedicated to Hiroshima trains and trams (no rarities though that I could see).

 

4. Fukuoka - remove from the map Bunkyodo inside Aeon Mall. I went to the mall, and there are no stores selling model trains there now. This is the location to remove:

6. Fukuoka - add Shin Osama Mokei - this is located 3 minutes from the south end of the Fukuoka station (and from the Yodobashi). Great model layout inside. A selection is relatively limited but may be good if you are looking for something special. I did not bother checking the prices. This store closes relatively early (5pm).

8. Fukuoka - Yodobashi, Popondetta and Hobbyland Pochi are still there near the train station, just as located on the map.

 

Popondetta is on the 8th (Hobby) floor of the AMU department store inside Hakata Station. Selection is reasonable but prices are not, they are too high. So don't buy here unless it's something you can't find elsewhere - I would check Yodobashi nearby first. I think Popondetta does have tax free available through AMU Tax Free service desk on either the 1st or the 2nd floor (i.e. pay tax at the store, get refund at the service desk).

 

HobbyLand Pochi is located on B1F (basement first) floor across the street inside the SunPlaza shopping center. The selection is limited (the store is small) and seems to be specialized on some older stuff. Seems overall similar to Shin Osama Mokei, except this store does not have a layout. Not certain about tax free.

 

Yodobashi - huge department store on the opposite side of the Hakata Station. Model trains are in the basement first floor (地下1階), among computers and other games, tucked in a far away corner inside the "Plastic Models" 🙂 department (enter when you see プラモデル and follow into the furthest away corner). Great prices (5-10% below Plaza Japan), tax free is available, great selection.

 

9. Nagasaki. The only store I was able to find is called Nagasaki Mokei Center ナガサキ模型センター . I was there about 20 minutes before its supposed closing time, but it was already closed. It is located in Nagasaki's main shopping area, 4 minute walk from Meganebashi tram stop on line 5 (green), or 5 minutes from Kankodori tram stop on line 1 (blue), in a small lane just off Motofurukawa dori (which goes from the Meganebashi stop). By looks of it, it's a small store that likely does not have the best selection but could have some rare old models. Google map link:

10. Kumamoto. There is a small shop called Kumaden Shop くまでんショップ inside the Kita Kumamoto station building of Kumaden line. It's totally NOT worth going there if you are into modelling, it's basically a toy/souvenir shop. 11. Kumamoto. There is a shop called Hobby Shop Cosmo ホビーショップコスモ . It is a small store quite a bit away from the city center (likely accessible through a JR line nearby station Tokaigakuen-mae). Model trains sit next to weapons (it's this kind of hobby shop) and it seems like the owner is not really keeping the stock very current or very full. Shelves are filled with old time models, I noted down Tomix 94028 JR series 211 that is probably at least 20 years old, and Kato 10-426 which is Kato's 2006 version of Azusa. And a lot of other Tomix and Kato models similar to these in numbers.

I also visited Edion Kumamoto, after my success finding a lot of models in Edion Hiroshima... but Edion Kumamoto did not have any apart from Pla Rail.

 

Last notes...

 

When you shop in Japan, have your train models somewhere close on your phone. Most stores put train models on shelves behind locks, so all you can see is the side of the box with the model number and the series number/description (in Japanese)/name (for named trains). Many stores arrange trains in the numerical order of model numbers too (although some arrange by region of operation). So it's handy to be able to look up model number and see what the associated train is, or alternatively have a list of what you are looking for with numbers, prepared ahead of time.

 

Note I did not see much in terms of Modemo or Tomytec tram models outside Tokyo and the Hiroshima store. If you are into those, do your shopping there...

Hi, anyone able to confirm these shops are still about. Just the five in the  Nipponbashi area of Osaka.

Not sure if l go there or go to Kyoto Yodobashi, Osaka Yodobashi has not got as much of a range as I'd  like. I've got all day, l could do both cities.

I'm chasing buildings, inclines and other stuff that l didn't know I'd need(want).

Further to this, does anyone have a link to a list of Kato trains? Damn impossible to find a simple numbered list with a pic of what it is. Ahh, found one, the search engine on a Kato site.

in the Osaka/Kyoto area, the best would be to visit Nipponbashi Denden town in Osaka. Some big shops are all close to each other, most notably Joshin Kids Land and Popondetta, HobbyPochi etc. All with huge collections of new and second hand models.

 

or you could go to RGR in Kobe.

Thanks, had decided to do exactly that, Nipponbashi area. May get there today after lunch. Kyoto is too busy due to Cherry blossom season. Haven't  been to Kobe so that may happen tomorrow, to early to make plans yet.

I added a load more museums today. If anyone has links to museums or chains of shops, especially link pages full of them like many Japanese websites have, I'm interested.

 

By the way, you can export these maps (all POIs or by category) and then import them into Google Maps, to help navigating there. I also find it useful to do because when I visit some other places I can see POIs nearby that may be of interest.

I'm up to 60 museums and have only done half the country. Google searches tend to miss out a lot of them too. Japan sure seems to love railway museums.
