Track Bumpers

Recommended Posts

I've almost finished ballasting all my track! (Yippee!!) But before I finish I need to put track bumpers in my yard. Does anyone have photos or models of what a Japanese track bumper of yard looks like? I want to see if I can scratch build them. Thanks.

I've been looking, but I haven't anything to share yet! I'm sure you couldn't go wrong with a basic concrete block or contraption made out of snips of rail based on a western prototype.

Thanks Capt. you're right. I took a look at the Kato bumpers and they offer 3 types, two look like blocks of concert and one is a typical Western prototype made from rails. So I have 3 choices.

I think at Tokyo station they just piled a bunch of sand on top of the rails at the end, at least on the shinkansen tracks ;)

At at least one station I saw the rails bent up to form a "very steep hill" (ie about 1 m high) over a length od about 1 metre

Thanks everybody. Boy I would love to see how bags of sand will stop a Shinkansen. (But it would make my modeling easier ;D)

Bernard, I don't think any regular track bumper would stop a shinkansen at high speed. They have different ways to avoid serious problems by causing a controlled derailing of trains etc.

Mark - Thanks that is exactly what I was looking for! It look easy to scratch build, that is if I just pour ballast at the end of the rails (except I ran out of ballast & so did my LHS because I bought the 3 bags they had) Great find.

The 8th one down was the one I was trying to describe. You could do that without ballast and with a pair of long nose pliers
