bill937ca
Friday (or perhaps Saturday, depending on Japanese work patterns) is the last day during which the automatic seats will be folded up on the Yamanote line. Congestion has ebbed since the cars were originally assigned to the Yamanote line in 1991. Effective Monday the seats will remain down and by August 2011 the six door cars will be replaced by four door cars. http://www.yomiuri.co.jp/dy/national/20100218TDY02306.htm Apart from overcrowding during delays, incidents like this are part of the reason why platform barriers are being installed. Guest ___
I like how the big push for this was to prevent suicides. There is talk of installing these here in DC on the above ground station on the Metro. From what I have seen of the low-gates used on outside stations, there's not much to keep someone from just climbing over it and jumping. Interior station have historically been floor to ceiling. so there is no way to get in front of the train-a horrible device for train buffs who like to photograph trains. Link to comment

qwertyaardvark
BOOO.... safety/railfan photographing barriers.... =_= Trying to take pictures of metro trains in Shanghai sucked for this very reason... On the bright side, having to take pictures from the end of the platform, people didn't get into the shots. only got weird stares from the station employees. Beijing was just outright depressing with its floor-to ceiling barrier and mostly underground stations ;_; *sadface* all those express/shinkansen trains running through station videos on youtube will never be the same....
