Kato FL12 fitment Shiki-Shima

Has anyone experience difficulties installing the Kato FL12 headlight/taillight decoder in this train. I have basically destroyed two sets trying to install these decoders, it seem like doesn't want to insert all the way in. I forced it in a couple of times and both times destroyed the decoder, and other times , the brass pick-ups were destroyed. Now just running with white lights for forward and reverse.☹️
