ATShinkansen
I’m trying to convert my second Kato Keiyo-Rinkai KD55 (ex-JNR DD13) to DCC, and I think I managed to melt the plastic around the brush contacts enough to render it unusable. It doesn’t respond to the decoder, but the headlights do. Does anyone know where I can find a replacement motor? It’s an older model, and the box (pack of 2 locomotives) did not come with a parts diagram. Item#10-369. Link to comment
UnfinishedKit
If it’s a fairly standard GM-5 5 pole open frame one then this is a good drop in replacement according to JHatake . That style of open frame motor seems very common across a lot of n scale brands. he has a pretty extensive motor directory Link to comment
UnfinishedKit
The kato part is 29-959-9 https://www.imon.co.jp/webshop/product/186306 Link to comment
ATShinkansen
I don’t think it’s that one. Here’s the motor. Link to comment
ATShinkansen
I may just try cutting out the melted parts, recovering the contacts and brushes, and making patches from styrene. Link to comment
ATShinkansen
Update: I was able to successfully revive the motor, and was able to complete the DCC conversion. It runs just fine now! 2 Link to comment
UnfinishedKit
Well done. Long may it continue. I’ve been totally unable to find replacements for that older type motor, although yahoo auctions or whatever it is nowadays is full of ‘junk’ items that feature it. Link to comment
beakaboy
It always pay to uninstall the brushes from motor and solder onto the brass cap separately to avoid melting things. ( although Its fiddly work to not lose the springs and brushes) Link to comment
