Sending a gift to japan

So was thinking of sending a small gift to our sister club in japan here soon. Does anyone know what, if any, duty and/or sales tax and fees might get charged on a $20 gift? Don’t wnat to bother sending it [shipping will be high] if they end up having to pay a lot to get the package as it’s a gift.

thanks

Not sure if its the same from the US, but we have sent gifts to Hiroshima and Abashiri multiple times since 2014 and we understand there was no fees at their end.  Some of the Christmas boxes to the relatives were around the $50 - $80 CDN range, got to make good use of the insane shipping costs.  We always filled in the customs declaration form fully, didn't want to mess it up at their end.

I will say however that my wife and her cousin came to an agreement not to send gifts back and forth anymore due to the costs, primarily shipping.  We be like Santa and deliver when we visit.  Still send Christmas stuff to Abashiri though.

Yes could change here from the us from what it was, was not thinking that direction, but im sure there are retaliations going on. I have not priced the shipping yet, may be too high now. Was more of a symbolic club to club gift.

we sent our son a box worth a few hundred USD at Christmas.  He didn't pay anything on his end.

YMMV
