Freight trains of Minami-Matsumoto station  Salted Vanilla video.

“Translation of the YouTube video description”

Minami Matsumoto Station is on the Shinonoi Line, but there are many direct trains from the Chuo Line. The express trains "Shinano" and "Azusa" pass through Minami Matsumoto Station. The passenger facilities are a single island platform with two tracks, and although it is quiet, freight transportation is active. There was a scene where a locomotive and a freight car crossed the main line. Minami Matsumoto Station is used by container freight trains and oil freight trains. (Cement transportation by rail has already ended.)

In addition to the container platform adjacent to the passenger station, there is a freight yard called "Matsumoto Comprehensive Complex" (about 1.4 km south of the passenger station). The track continues from "Matsumoto Comprehensive Complex" to the oil storage facility of Japan Oil Terminal and Japan Oil Network. In winter, oil transportation is actively carried out, and there are many things to see here, such as shunting, sorting of freight cars, composition work, and oil extraction work. The shunting work within the premises is handled by HD300 type hybrid locomotives. (There were two aircraft on duty, probably because it was the busy season.) While many petroleum products arrive, the container cargoes sent out seem to be mostly harvested agricultural products, fruits and vegetables, soft drinks, etc. Petroleum products are shipped from Yokkaichi City, Mie Prefecture, Yokohama City and Kawasaki City, Kanagawa Prefecture, and the coastal areas of Chiba Prefecture, and delivered by freight train (tank car).

In fiscal year 2021, Minami Matsumoto Station handled an average of 2,811 tons of freight per day. This is the fifth highest in Japan in terms of the handling volume of freight. (From JR Freight CORPORATE PROFILE) According to Matsumoto City statistics, the arrival volume at Minami Matsumoto Station was 978,378 tons of freight by car and 76,895 tons of containers, for a total of 1,055,273 tons. (Fiscal year 2020) The dispatch volume at Minami Matsumoto Station was 89,480 tons of freight by car and 118,215 tons of containers, for a total of 207,695 tons. (2020) Freight trains don't get much attention, but they steadily support life in inland areas.

Kyosan-mukashi at Nobeoka Station, morning shunting.  Video by Nosuview's Japanese freight train channel

“Translation of the YouTube video description”

There are two freight trains arriving at Nobeoka Station. This time, please take a look at the shunting of the trains arriving in the morning. The point is that shunting using shunting railcars, which continues to this day, still continues. Nowadays, it is more common for the towing engine to simply push the container into the container platform. However, since Nobeoka Station has three separate platforms, only the railcars remained. The successor model, DB500 53, was delivered the other day, and attention is focused on whether one of the Kyosan Kogyo railcars will be put into reserve, or whether another DB500 will be added. The baton is handed over from the EF81 to the switcher in an instant [Shunting at Nishi-Oita Station Part 2]   Video by Nosuview's Japanese freight train channel

The tightness of the shunting is truly instantaneous. The 4075 train arrives at Nishi-Oita Station after the rush hour, and the front half of the train is made up of Koki cars that are released at this station, so it quickly shunts, leaving the Koki cars bound for Nobeoka Station on the main line. [Part 1] Click here for shunting of the 4071 train towed by ED76.

[Nagoya Rinkai Railway] Shunting of just one car - Sanyo Chemical Industries private line.      Video by Nosuview's Japanese freight train channel

“Translation of the YouTube video description”

On the Nagoya Rinkai Railway, you can enjoy a leisurely shunting on this private line located south of Higashiko Station. However, it is only open at around 8am, so you need to be fully prepared to visit. On the day we visited, there was only one car arriving and one leaving... It seems unlikely that this ethylene oxide transport will ever end, but the shunting was quite minimal. There are surprisingly few private lines that branch off from the main line and can be observed from the road, so it is now a rare sight. Camera: SONY Cybershot RX10M3 Microphone: TASCAM TM-2X

A day in the life of a railcar who can't go back to the garage but works hard in silence - The last two years of a shunting railcar at Ogino warehouse

This is the Oginosoko shunting car, which was in charge of shunting on the Chuetsu Pulp private line in Takaoka, which you saw previously. For the last two years, the tracks between the Oginosoko depot and the main line were converted into a parking lot for another company and the tracks were removed, so it was unable to return to the depot and was operated coupled to the end of the line. When it was put into this operation in 2018, there was talk among private line enthusiasts that it would finally be abolished, but it surprisingly survived and was able to be seen in operation until the end of 2020.

Nice little shunter. Have a project to build something like that shunter in N scale. Maybe using a Kato chassis

Very interesting to see all the extra warning lights/beacons on a lot of the locomotives, very reminiscent of the remote control ones here but these all seem to have a driver in the cab.

Doing this on my temporary layout, one oil tank car in, one tank car out, serving a indetermined industry. Not sure if it is prototypical. 🤔
