Hi Guys

Today I tried to install a DN163K4A decoder in a Kato DE10 (which fits perfectly) but unfortunately it doesn’t work

Any idea of what could be wrong ?

here a small film

Make sure nothing is shorted.   I don’t know off hand what would cause that but double check all possible shorts.  Trace all in and out paths.

Could you elaborate a bit? We see from the video that you are trying to read the DCC Address, the loco moves a bit and the LEDs on the decoder flash during the operation (this is normal), but the DCC Address returned seems to be zero (which is not normal). Correct?

It looks like you have the decoder on the main line but have the Engine Driver in service mode.

Change Engine Driver to Operation Mode that way it will send and look for the decoder responses on the

Main line.

Hi guys

thanks for the answers….. I have been checking everything, and as a precaution i insulated all parts which could be possibly a risk of making unwanted contact with the frame with kapton tape….

It turned out to be the decoder which didn’t make contact to the frame in a correct way…. (And i didn’t forget the little plastic part on the de10 which should provide better contact.)  I made a little plastic piece which i pushed under the decoder, and now everything works fine !

btw, the DE10 was not on the main line, but on a programming track… 😉

Anyway, thanks for taking the time to answer, very much apreciated, specially for beginners like myself…..

Tom,

Oh, you are lucky. If DC gets to the DCC side of the decoder it could blow the decoder and Command Station.

After you complete an install place the Loco on a piece of track and perform continuity test

  1. from A rail to B Rail
  2. From A rail to A side of Frame
  3. From B Rail to B Side of Frame
