Vienna Tram Photos - February 2025

Okay, by popular demand, a few Vienna tram photos (and one U-Bahn photo).  The first two pics were taken from my hotel room.  They were harder to take than I expected as I the trams move at a decent pace and my timing was off on the first few tries.  Our hotel is just outside the inner city and beyond the Danube Canal.  The first shot shows the No. 2 tram heading into the city - it will round that curve, cross the canal and turn left to run on the Ringstrasse.  The second shot shows an outbound tram.  I like the flags decorating the front of each tram.  The last shot is a Viennese Ochamizu where the U-Bahn pops out of a tunnel to cross another canal at an angle.  Hard to get a good shot there.

We will be heading out shortly and I hope to get some more tram pictures at Schwedenplatz which is just across the Danube Canal and is the junction for several tram lines.

I called it that because the train bridge runs at an angle across the canal and has a similar feel to the real Ochimazu.  But there are no other tracks there and the only trains are the U-Bahn four car trains.  There is an OBB line a few blocks away on a viaduct and some street trams nearby but I did not see a spot where I could get multiple trains in one picture.

Here are two shots I took today of a different tram type.  I think this spot must be the prototype for the Unitram system as the tracks run in an oval around a small block containing three buildings of about four or five stories height.

 

The first picture - taken from the the first floor of the Natural History Museum shows a train turning northwest where it will turn again for the Dr-Karl-Renner-Ring stop where there is a connection with the tram lines running on the Ringstrasse.  It will then turn and run in a loop around the block.  When it reaches the spot in the photo, it then turns southeast - essentially a return loop.  The second photo shows a tram leaving the station to start going around the building.

Two more photos, the first shows the third type of tram I have seen which is an older model.  This is at the same station but on the Ringstrasse route.

The second photo shows a tram on the loop turning into the station.

A the last two for today.  A close up of the cab of one of the newer units and a different type in advertising livery.  Both are at the same station on the Ringstrasse line.

There is another junction with the Ringstrasse at Schwedenplatz which is near our hotel.  Hopefully I will be able to get a few more pictures today.

A U-Bahn appetizer before some more tram pictured.  We took the U-4 out to Schonbrun today so some shots at Schonbrun station after we arrived.

My plan this morning was to get some pictures at Schwedenplatz.  I was hoping to catch a mix of the tram types and get all three in one shot.  However, breakfast was a bit too leisurely and we were out somewhat later than planned and well after the morning service peak.  My sense is that the older tram units are used to supplement the new units at busy times.  So no luck getting a shot with trams on every track but 3 out of 4 is not too bad.

And some night action on our return to the hotel after dinner.  Tomorrow is the last day of our trip but I will keep my eyes open and take more pics if I see anything interesting.

Hard to imagine but I have not had a single Viennese donut yet!  On the other hand, we have had Kaffe und Kuchen everyday .... sometimes twice a day ....

Okay - back at the hotel prepping for our return flights tomorrow but a few posts as it did turn out to be an interesting day tram wise - with one surprise disappointment.

But, before I get to that, need to put things right for @cteno4!

So, two donut related pictures.

Might as well get the disappointment out of the way first.  I had found another tram line and got some pictures on our way to Naschmarkt after which we headed to the Albertina Modern museum.  I was sitting in the lobby before we left and looked up to see an old Duwag style tram go by the museum!  Austrian colors: red lower body and white up to the roof which was black or dark gray.  I was so surprised that I could not react until it had gone past so missed a chance to get a shot.

 

Now for some interesting things at Schwedenplatz.  The tram lines on the Ringstrasse are on their own right of way which is concrete.  As I was waiting for Mira, this ambulance came along the line and across the station area, entirely on the tram right of way.

Dogs get to ride the trams too!

And Schwedenplatz would be a neat modeling project if I were more skilled, disciplined and focused.  The map - which includes a significant mistake! - shows the area.  Trams on the Ringstrasse and the Number 2 line approaching from the north to turn left into the station and proceed along the Ringstrasse.  The U-Bahn runs underneath in this area and can actually be seen from the north side of the river.  On the south bank there is a walkway and a wall with the trams above.  The wall is set up as a gallery so standing on the bridge or north bank, you can see trams on street level and subway trains on the lower level.  With several types of subway cars and three or four different tram types, plus some buses and ambulances(!), someone could make a neat layout.

And, you want to know what is the mistake on the map?  One of the tram lines is missing!  The number 2 line can be seen on the left crossing the bridge, but that track is one way southbound.  The one way northbound track is on the bridge on the right.  Number 2 Line trams coming from the Ringstrasse have a stop before the bridge then turn right to cross and proceed northbound on Taborstrasse.  The northbound and southbound lines come together about a half kilometer north of the bridge. Someone wasn't paying attention to the details when they did that map!

And, last but not least, I found another tram line.  We took the U-Bahn to Karlsplatz where I saw trams from the Badner Bahn.  I am guessing this is a private company not affiliated with Vienna Lines as the livery and emblems are totally different.  A couple of pictures coming and going of these units running with two sets together.  And a picture of the tram/bus interchange stop.

 

I will say the drivers of these trams looked more interested in their job than the Vienna Line tram drivers who generally looked bored and disinterested.  One WL driver was sitting in the cab slumped down in the seat - maybe ready for a nap?  The Badner-Bahn trams also looked cleaner though I did not get to ride one to see with the interior looked like.

 

Anyway, that is the last of my Vienna trams.
