Thermal cutout

The Bachmann PeterWhit trolly that I scratch built a White Pass loco runs on its own no problems.

but if running for about 15 minutes with a rake of 5 cars it stops , after a rest of several minutes it

will restart , then more running will repeat the stopping .

Question , is there a thermal cut out on the factory installed DCC board/decoder ?

Do you have one of those little laser thermometers? I’ve found them handy to shoot trains having issues to quickly see if they are heating up as just by feel usually is not very quantitative. They are pretty cheap. I had a few trams (one the very old greenmover) that got acutely hot in a couple of spots and started running rough.

have you tried running it without the shell?

Well, the Peter Witt streetcar chassis was never intended or designed to pull five freight cars. If there isn't some thermal or excess current amperage cutout, that's worse because then you are overheating the motor and it could die. You don't want to have it let out the electrical "magic smoke" that makes it run.

Many models are designed so that the wheels slip before subjecting the motor to potential damage. Have you noticed any wheel slip?
