john_ibw
It's been over a decade since I actively participated in the forum. I was on and off here back then, but life got busy, and I haven't been active for a long time. I've visited the forum occasionally, and it's great to see the community thriving. So, hello again to all! Now to my question: I'm trying to understand the difference between the 10-1727 Limited Edition complete set (locomotive and cars) and the combination of the 2028-2 locomotive with 10-1728 cars when purchased separately. Are there any notable differences in features, details, packaging, or exclusivity? I'd appreciate it if someone could shed some light on this. I appreciate any help you can provide. Kingmeow
I would go for the fancier box! Especially if it's the same price, which it is. Link to comment
john_ibw
Thank you for your replies. I haven’t decided if I want to get me one as yet. But, this helps! Link to comment

If India wins the 5th test against Australia get a set to celebrate...if India looses the 5th test get the set as a consolation 😀 Either way you win as it is a wonderful set of an iconic Japanese SL train now sadly no longer running. cteno4
JNS creates a lot of pushers. You know you want it, it will feel so good once you buy it, it will look so good on your layout, etc… almost like many of us are getting kickbacks from the hobby shops to get new customers hooked. jeff 1 1 Link to comment

It's been a while! On another topic, do you remember the thread long ago discussing a large yard? I think it was a display and not a layout. I looked for it and could not find it. Link to comment
cteno4
Hey John, welcome back! Glad you remembered us. hmm there have been a number of discussions on yards in the past. We had a bit 12 track 16 car Shinkansen yard on the old JRM club layout. There was a topic or mention in a topic of a very wide (maybe 12 or 16 track) yard I’m pretty sure was in Taiwan (but Taiwan and yard search did not bring anything up) that had very nicely done etched girder and truss system for catenary over it. Lots of smaller discussions on yard planning details. any other details you can remember. Also remember the AND feature of the search as first pass on search is if any term is in anything. You can then hit the Term X AND Term Y below the search field to narrow things down. cheers jeff 1 Link to comment

Lots of smaller discussions on yard planning details. That's the one! The one with the etched girder! I initially searched for Korea instead of Taiwan because I remembered it was created by a team outside of Japan. From what I recall, it was intended as a static display rather than part of a layout. I regret not saving the pictures—this layout has always stuck in my mind. Since then, I've been quietly collecting the Tomix yard kits and extension kits to build something similar, albeit on a much smaller scale. Up until then, I had only been using Kato tracks, but the Tomix tram system and yard designs inspired me to incorporate some Tomix tracks into my layout as well. 1 Link to comment
john_ibw
I'm sharing a few pictures of the Tomix kits I put together. It was a lot of fun assembling them! 3 Link to comment
cteno4
Found it! Good memory as I apparently found the yard and posted about it 14.5 years ago! nice yard coming along! Are those the longest Tomix trusses? Are they sold separately or just with those yard kits? I love yards! jeff 1 Link to comment

Thanks, Jeff! The trusses are part of the kits—you connect two or more span sections to extend them as needed. I’m a big fan of yards as well. Even just assembling a couple of these kits can quickly create a realistic look without requiring much additional scenery. It gives the scene a busy, detailed vibe that’s satisfying to take in. I also enjoy the process of building kits like these, especially larger ones with plenty of details. They’re so rewarding to put together! Link to comment
cteno4
I had completely forgotten about the Tomix 3007 kit that is expandable. Get on @Kamome442 to do an etched metal expandable kit! jeff 2 Link to comment

Graeme Well, the parcel arrived today, folks—and surprise! Instead of just the one model rail set I planned to get, TWO showed up. This forum should have a financial warning label: 'Side effects may include spontaneous double purchases and wallet fatigue.' 😂 Now, if anyone needs me, I’ll be busy convincing myself this was a rational decision. After all, who needs groceries when you’ve got twice the rolling stock? This is my first time owning an N-scale steam loco, and wow, it looks so detailed! I can’t wait to lay down some tracks and watch these in action. Of course, now the KATO turntable is whispering sweet nothings in my ear... guess this rabbit hole has no bottom! Welcome to the slippery slope that is Japanese SL models...the latest offerings from Kato (& Tomix) are wonders of detail and engineering. Your C11 is a great model too but so is Kato's, C12, D51 etc. My modest collection of 29 models find a happy home in my facsimile of the Kyoto Railway Museum roundhouse and turntable. Graeme This looks incredible! Are these roundhouses from Kato? From what I understand, they’re the ones without doors, right? Also, how did you create the taller ones on the left? Did you modify the Kato models? Link to comment
SL-san
15 hours ago, john_ibw said: Did you modify the Kato models? Hi john_ibw Yes they are the Kato roundhouse 3 stall models which I modified by cutting surplus side walls up and adding them to the single story base. I had to provide new internal supports in styrene where each 3 stall set joined and added thin styrene strips to disguise panel joins and resprayed walls before fitting glazing. I used to be an Architect so doing this sort of stuff did not daunt me. The hardest job was adding the lots of tiny LEDs to illuminate the roundhouse! Graeme 6 Link to comment

I was almost certain the Kato one had been modified, but I wasn’t sure about the specifics. The lighting setup must have been a lot of work, but the result is worth it—it looks fantastic! Thanks for sharing the photo with the lights on. It’s inspiring, and now I can’t help but want one too! 🙂 1 Link to comment
