Slow Forum?

Just wondering if anyone else was experiencing slower than usual response times for the forum?  For me it is happening on 2 laptops and my Samsung phone, all running Firefox.  I  would estimate it is taking 4 - 5 times as long to open a topic, or even to open the site to start; its slow enough that I keep expecting to get some sort of time-out or page not found error.  First noticed it earlier this week.  No issues with other sites.

Just timed it, seems to be around 20 seconds from clicking on a link to page opening, if that helps.

Yes. It was reported yesterday.  Martijn was advised by one of moderators. Also a busy time of the year to have to make time for outside interests.

Yes likely something with one of the servers, seems to have worked itself out. But may still hiccup some. Martijn is on a trip right now so could not tear into things. But no server stuff being done by Martijn right now causing it.

 

interesting only slowdown reports in North America so it could be an Amazon s3 issue in North America. Anyone else seen any slow ups over the last couple of days in other areas of the world?

No, it's been pretty slow from Europe as well. But there has been so many slowdowns recently, I had chalked it down to another temporary Internet hiccup.

For me it's loading fine at the moment, but there have been some issues in recent weeks. I've had to restart the server completely a couple of times before because it stopped responding completely.

 

As Jeff said, I'm not current at home, so I can't do much to look into the issue. I was planning on doing some maintenance / upgrades to the forum soon, since I do have some time off from work currently. It is a rather big upgrade though, since optimally I need to set up a new server with the new OS version that Amazon released a while ago.

 

I'll be back home late this weekend, so I should be able to start looking into at then.

Just another data point.  Yes, some slowness yesterday but not 20 seconds.  More like 10 seconds and not constantly.  I would say 40% of the time.  Not too big of a nuisance for me as I can look at other websites and come back.

Was very slow this am here, but now zippy. Feels like something more network oriented than just server going on and off like this.

Hmm.. It could be, because it's an older server / instance, that it's running on older hardware as well, which can include older networking.

 

I'll do a bit of research in the coming weeks while working on the updates, see if I can find something of a bottleneck somewhere.

It’s been timing out and slowing up in fits and starts here and there, seems like no consistent pattern.

Just a quick update on this. I haven't managed to move the forum to a new server yet. I did start looking into it, but AWS has changed quite a few things since last time I set up a server, so I need to do a little additional research.

 

I also got sidetracked a bit by building a layout. I figured since I haven't had a lot of motivation to work on the layout the past years, I'd work on the layout for a bit 🙂

The forum seems to be behaving pretty well after the holidays.  I have not noticed any slow downs lately.

Yes, it's very random.. Sometimes it's just fine for weeks or even months, and then all of a sudden it becomes unresponsive several days in a row.

Maybe more traffic during the holidays when most people are home.

Possibly yes, although AWS usually handles that rather well. Another option is that one of the virtual machines on the physical hardware that the forum's VM is running out, was causing issues. It's all shared resources unless you get a dedicated server. That's a bit too expensive for the forum though 😄
