Kato HO Kiha 80/82 Decals

I would like to clarify.....before I start cutting into anything.

The Kiha 80 82 cars come with 3 sheets of "transfers"....2 are of the standard rub on style, one for the lower bodyside car numbers in silver and one sheet in red for the car ends and other bits.

The third and largest sheet contains train names and Limited express signs for the small boards by the coach door along with the individual car No. These are not rub on style they are glossy with sticky on the back .....so are they to be cut out individually and stuck on the appropriate spaces? This seems to be the only alternative however I just wanted to confirm before I attack the sheet with a knife. Thanks in advance. 😀

Yes the glossy sticker sheet are uncut stickers for service name, destination and coach number.

A little advice, cut to the inside edge of the surrounding border. These signs in real life had no borders on and they will fit flush in their respective recesses without any surrounding box. Use a toothpick to push the edges into the corners.

Not sure how accurate but I used service name by the passenger door and Ltd. Express at the other end in the service panel. I saw an image of a Hokkai service like this but don’t know if that’s how it was across the board.

Kato also produce an alternative headmarks as an upgrade set if you’re looking for alternative trains. I went with a Matsukaze service due to its history in the area I currently live.

Thanks for that, I'm adding a dining car to my Kamome set, so I was going to do the same, with the express board at the non door end. The other cars in the set are already done....I bought it s/hand and the deCals were already added, so I wanted to be sure.....thank you!

Great choice. Ironically I didn’t go with that despite my avatar name.

What kind of formation have you got planned?

Nagasaki 7 car

Sasebo 6 car

Full 13 car

I'm going with a 6 car.....and as I was living in Sasebo on my first visit to Japan it makes sense, I will end up with a 4 car set as well.....10 in all.

The Diner is ready to join the train now, as I mentioned I bought the set second hand....checking all the coaches 5 are for Sasebo....and 1...  is decalled as car 11  for Nagasaki.

So now I am obviously obliged to complete a full 13 car set.....😆   and I 'd like to get the numbers right.

So according to my research( a full set of 1968 vintage had 7+6 with 1 dining car as opposed to 1961  when there were two. So in the second version would the diner  have been part of the Nagasaki set?

Sorry, it is some time since you posted and I had not seen it.

From what I found, the Kamome in the early 60s went to both Nagasaki and Miyazaki instead of Sasebo. The formation was still a 13 coach train from Kyoto but was assumedly split at Kokura with the shorter half (6 cars) going along the Nippo line to Miyazaki. The formation information I found had a diner, due to the longer duration of the journey. The kishi 80 was in the same position, next to the green car kiro 80 but had one less Kiha 80 than its Nagasaki counterpart.

Kiha 82/Kiro 80/Kishi 80/Kiha 80/Kiha 80/Kiha 82

In later years the 2nd diner was dropped as customer could probably manage not having a catering service until it was joined with the Nagasaki section. Would’ve been a long walk up the train for quite a few people but they may have been a trolley service or the heyday of the ekiben would’ve been a big draw. Orio station in Fukuoka prefecture was one of the more famous ekiben, and still is to this day. A tricolour of locally reared chicken, egg, seaweed on rice. It is rather sweet for my taste but the company has been selling them for over a century. The chap who sells them on the platform (used to be 5) is rather a local celebrity.
