Hello guys,

I have a question aboht series 35 coaches...

I've just received 2x OHAFU33 and 3x OHA35, in H0 scale, all them in brown, like the ones in attached picture.

I would know what kind of loco, electric and diesel, and  what color, is a realistic match...

Many thanks everybody.

OHA35 & OHAFU33

It looks like a wide range.  From HS "Its range of operation was widespread across the country, and it was used on everything from express trains to local trains." JNR rolling stock that lasted into the JR era.

[Example of organization]
- Towing machine + Suhafu 42 + Suhafu 43 + Suhafu 43 + Oha 447 + Suhafu 42 + Suhafu 42 + Oha 47 + Suha 43 + Suhafu 42
- Towing machine + OhaFu 33 + Oha 35 + Suha 43 + SuhaFu 42 + Oha 35 + Oha 47 + Oha 35 + OhaFu 33

I know that Tarumi Railway had 3x OHAFU33 and 1x OHA35 which were the standard brown when they arrived, later added a red stripe to them and at least 2 went light blue at the end. They pulled them with their TDE10s which are DE10s with a different paintjob. So just getting a normal JNR DE10 would work (cause that's how they arrived at the Line aswell).

A YouTube video with them using 3 cars would be this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vbeUZwpp-1s

This is quite the topic!  The JNR "old timer coaches" span a massive time frame from the JGR prewar era up to the present day on a few tourist and JR heritage runs.  These coaches would have been pulled by any passenger type locomotive in the JNR era, and a few JR locomotives as well for tourist trains.

Regarding the coach colors, the shift in old type coaches from brown to blue was done in Showa 39/ Oct. 1964 for any new build or modernization of old type passenger cars.  Anytime after this point a mix of blue and brown was common, in the late 70s brown cars became much more rare as most of the fleet of older cars had been retired or overhauled.  The last known brown cars in service were three combine cars retired in 1986.

The shift to blue for JNR passenger cars probably came with the introduction of the first "blue train" 20 series sleeper express coaches, which were much more modern and comfortable than the older general service "old type" coaches.  When JNR began a large scale program of overhauling and modernizing its general service coach fleet they adopted the express color for the general service pool as well.  This generally corresponded to the replacement of steam engines with diesel or electric power, as the blue coaches would show soot and smoke much faster than the brown coaches.

So your brown coaches would be appropriate for any JNR passenger train up until the early 80s.  For HO scale this would allow you to run with most JNR power currently available.

For Kato HO locomotives you could use:

  • DD51
  • D51
  • C56
  • EF65 (500 or 1000 series type)
  • EF58
  • EF81 (as this was an 80s locomotive brown coaches would be much less common by this point)

For Tomix HO locomotives:

  • DF50
  • DD51
  • EF66
  • EF62
  • EF63 (usually ran as a pair, connected to an EF62 as helpers up Usui Pass)
  • EF64 (modern day JR tourist train)

For Tenshoto and Tramway engines most steam would be appropriate, heavy steam like C62 and C59s did pull shorter trains when used as Hiroshima commuter locomotives on the Kure Line as well.  EF57 and ED10 were common passenger electric engines on JNR mainlines before the modern blue electrics took over.

@Kiha66 answer is pretty comprehensive. I'm a fan of red AC electrics so wanted to add to the list. Obviously as the coaches aged, they were moved to local and more rural services as new coaching stock replaced it so it really depends on the kind of train you wanted to create. The 5 coaches you have make a nice local line train so other locos I may suggest are:

Zoukei Mura DD54

Tomix EF71

Tomix ED78

Tomix ED75

Tomix usually produced both JNR and JR spec for those loco types built before privatization. Just check which model you'd need. The JR spec ones tended to have JR marks added but not always.

Tramway ED71

Tramway EF70

Tramway 8620

A mail car would also be a nice addition. Something like a Mani 36, Mani 60 or Oyu 10. The Itaya Pass is certainly one area still using brown coaching stock in the mid 1980s.

Check out the video of EF71/ED78s up and down the pass.
